Well, I'm loving Captain America again, which is great. With issue 614 the Trial of Bucky Cap kicks into high gear against the backdrop of Sin's masterplan to avenge her father. It's as if Brubaker has refreshed himself, serving up the kind of storytelling we all loved at the start of his run alongside a plot that feels like a natural progression of everything he's done before.
The trial is classic Marvel, demonstrating a loving use of continuity, not least in bringing back Steve's ex, Bernie Rosenthal as defence counsel. I don't remember her much from back in the day, but she's an impressive, strong character in keeping with the other women in Steve's life like Sharon and Natasha. Much like Matt Fraction, Brubaker seems keen to write such exceptional female characters who, while not the title hero, can easily match the skills of the lead. For this he should be applauded. From there Bernie cross examines the likes of Norman Osborn in a brilliant two panel cameo ("How many times (have) you been institutionalised for delusions?"), before bringing on her star witness, Dr Faustus. Of course, all this hard work is undermined next by the trial being derailed by supervillain shenanigans in the mighty Marvel manner, as Sin's plan stands revealed and Bucky risks all the hard work to save him that's gone before.
The pencils are by Butch Guise as usual, with something of a glut of inkers over the top. This does vary the tone wildly from one page to another, particularly as the colours are by another host of colourists. Still there's a lot to praise. For one, the story involves a great deal of talking heads in a courtroom setting, but Guice moves his "camera" about the scene onstantly changing angles and perspectives, keeping the reader involved. I also love Cap'n Steve in a suit that has kind of a 60s Nick Fury cut to it. Finally there's a scene depicting a conversation between Bucky and Faustus in the back of a paddy wagon. I hate to use the phrase cinematic, but that's what I thought of when reading it. Specifically, it reminded me of the shadowy cinematography used in 70s conspiracy thrillers like All The President's Men. From me that's high praise indeed.
I'm afraid I don't have the patience for the Nomad back up, so I'm not even going to comment on it. The main feature however is everything I want it to be. There's suspenseful superheroics which feel modern in style, yet demonstrate a love for all the Cap history that's gone before. Along with that you've got deft character work, tense courtroom drama, thrilling intrigue and a Black Widow that may no longer be the "slut of the Marvel Universe". In short, it's good again people!
