After issue upon issue of political intrigue, covert maneuvering, and psychological back-and-forth, Brubaker and Epting manage to give us fans a tried and true comic book staple: a good ‘ol fashioned superhero fight.  After teasing the return of Steve Rogers before revealing said Steve as the Grand Director, Brubaker spent last issue setting the scene for the inevitable confrontation between the two ersatz Captains that we see this issue.

Given the nature of the story this month, it feels more like Epting’s issue more than it does Brubaker’s for once.  The essence of the main plot this issue is basically a big fight, meaning perhaps the visuals are more key than the words.  As such, it should be important to note that Epting really stepped to the plate this issue, I think.  Honestly, I think you could read this with just the art alone and understand what exactly is going on.  Epting really seems to sell much of the story this time around for me.  The positions and panel work feel very classic and almost indicative of Neal Adams on the Avengers.  There’s a very deep story telling quality to the art here that feels like it was almost done in the old Stan Lee way of making an issue with the artist telling the story while the writer backs it up with dialogue.  There’s a lot of attacks here that feel very similar to an old school Silver Age fight, especially the GD’s punches.  The face is also very expressive and has a lot of range this issue as well from the GD’s anger at Bucky to the facial expressions in the subplot of the Sharon/Sin fight.  All around, I think this issue was Epting’s best work yet on Captain America.

Brubaker’s no slouch in this issue either as he gives us both the main thurst of the subplot between Sharon and Sin as well as the inner thoughts of Bucky as he gets the tar beat out of him by the much stronger and faster GD.  He also gives us the big cliffhanger that puts one (maybe two?) of the characters’ lives in danger.  Overall, this issue was great.  The action was intense and the progression was well-done.  The story maintains an interesting level with great art supported with great writing.  Brubaker and Epting are clearly writing the great Marvel epic for their time and next issue cannot come soon enough,

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 5 - Excellent

  1. I’m impressed with the amount of comics history and artistic theory you put into this review. I lost interest in this arc a little earlier, but that’s okay since you tell us what happens! (maybe a spoiler alert needed here)

  2. I have been on the fence about dropping this book and they give us this issue and draw me back in to a high level of interest.  The story has been moving so slow but I felt like this issue accomplished something – even if it was a lot of fighting

  3. this issue was great and I loved the movement Epting put in 50’s Cap, I could really feel how fast he was moving compared to Bucky which for a static image is pretty flippin amazing.

  4. This issue really was a master class by Epting.

    Such a great comic.

  5. Excellent comic – excellent review.

Perhaps we need some props for the colorist Frank D’Armata as well. The night scene looked beautiful as Bucky fought for his life against the GD.
