I've been pretty curious about this book, and, after Issue 1. . .I'm still curious.
There's a lot of potentially interesting material to explore here with Cable. I particularly like the spin that he doesn't really know what to expect in this future. He's always been the guy who was able to think ten steps ahead because of his connection to the future (or, at least, he's liked to portray himself that way) and suddenly he's flying blind. I also like the notion of Cable as a Messiah who's always looking for a new mission, as when he says that he knows he was born to do something great, and maybe saving the baby is it.
So far, I don't have any concept of how well this series is going to realize the potential. I know the book is continued from Messiah Complex, but an issue 1 ought to have hook of its own, and I don't know what that is. The post-Apocalyptic world, particularly, feels very generic. I don't have any concept of what makes this nightmare future different from a hundred I've seen before, in movies, comics, and sci-fi stories.
Structurally, most of the issue is spent recapping Messiah Complex, and the only thing that makes the story interesting is its connection to Messiah Complex. I'm all about making comics accessible for jumping-on, but it seems like this is a story that doesn't need to be told to anyone who is bothering to read the comic (or could be told in the recap page).
I don't have strong feelings on the art; it's not my favorite thing (why is everything so SHINY these days?), but it looks better on the page than the online previews I saw.
I'm still interested in where this is going, but I'm pretty sure it's not there yet.

WHO IS THE BABY?!?
Obviously, it’s either his mom or his sister.
Or his other mom.
Or it’s Mary Jane. That could be the twist. The mutant baby is Mary Jane, and Jackpot is Jean Grey.
I think the baby will be Cable. And here’s why. My sister was born with a gorgeous head of black hair. A month later, it all fell out and now she’s a blondish-brown. The red hair could fall out and turn white.
Also, on Olivetti’s art: For some stories he’s the perfect choice. For others, not so much. I think back to his run on Punisher: War Journal and how much that just didn’t fit the character. His painted style would be better suited to a book that’s going to be kind of silly or lighthearted.
One last thought: Is every future timeline in the X-Men sequence of time post-apocalyptic? It seems like no matter what future they leap into, something horrible has happened
The future is for horrible things! Haven’t you heard? Just like Marvel What-Ifs. "What if Spidey burned his toast the day he met MJ?" "EVERYBODY DIED!!!"
So, if the baby is Cable — who HAS been in the room with his baby self before, by the way — then is he just calling it she as a clever ruse? Does Cable conduct clever ruses in his own voiceover, just to be safe?
*God, I miss Cable & Deadpool* But I’m soldiering on! Much like Cable! I like Duane Swierczynski a lot, so I hope this will deliver.
Cable has been in the same room as his baby self before? Dude…
See, this is why I DO NOT read X-Men comics. Sheesh. 🙂
@Neb — And this is why I *love* X-men comics. Cable has the best backstory EVER.
