When I picked up Black Widow number 1, oh about a month ago (doesn’t time fly eh?) I was hopeful, but not convinced that it would be a good book. I have read a bit of Marjorie Liu’s work for Marvel and it has been alright. Nothing to write home about. This new series is, so far, very good though. Issue 1 was gritty and intriguing, going some way to being almost exactly what I want from a spy story.

Issue 2 continues this sterling work in fine style by doing the, by now well worn yet effective, hero is significantly weakened, but still a total bad ass spy trope; to show us just how wicked the Black Widow is, if we didn’t know already.

Reading this books brings to mind Iron Man 2. I am reminded of how off the mark I thought Scarlett Johanson was, how light weight and young she looked and this books starkly illustrates why. Liu brings to life Natalia Romanova as a tough, resourceful and dangerous spy with a dark past. here we see her motivations and get a sense of the wealth of skills and knowledge she possesses which make her one of the deadliest women in the MU.

We get a look at the people behind the plot to bring the Black Widow down as well, being suitably machiavellian and dodgy looking, trying to turn her allies against her. They also go some way to succeeding as well, using Natasha’s greatest strength – her spying ability – against her.

Liu also does a great job by letting Acuna do his. There are many pages without any words or dialogue and Acuna is in command of more than enough artistic flair and understanding to accurately and sympathetically communicate the flow of the action. This whole book feels very cinematic and by the end of the book you are left in no doubt about Natasha’s spy credentials and she is immediately placed in the upper echelons of Marvel women when we reach the final page.

Overall, a very enjoyable book, which gets my pick this week as a well crafted and atmospherically illustrated spy story which only leaves me wanting more.
