Before picking up this book, I really had no idea who Black Lightning was. I didn't even really have an interest in who he was, or what he did. I picked this up on a whim because I've enjoyed the writer, and the art looked pretty.

What I found was one of the best books I read this week. As someone who works for non-profits in the area of youth advocacy and community development, it's great to see a book who deals with the issue realistically, without romanticizing or dramatizing it. What Jeff goes through in this book is exactly what a lot of people go through every day. This is one of the few times in comics that I think the writer is able to portray exactly what the character would be feeling in the given situation.

For anyone who generally dislikes the character of Black Lightning, or superheroes in general: This issue isn't really about superheroes, in the capes sense. This issue is almost solely focused on real superheroes, as cliche as that sounds. It seems as if the book will eventually make a more superhero-focused turn, but for now you should drop any reservations you have about the superhero genre and check this book out. I urge everyone reading this to.
