The next book in the much buzzed about Before Watchmen minis is certainly worthy of the buzz.

It could have been cliche; mom and daughter drama, teen angst, that sort of thing. But, of course, this is Darwyn Cooke and Amanda Conner so there was no way it was going to be anything other than brilliant. And part of the brilliance is how they manage to bring you so completely and fully into the lives of the characters in mere pages. This is everyday life with just a blush of superheroes. It’s rich, it’s emotional, it’s relatable and all together it makes it a compelling read.

In addition to co- writing, Conner is drawing and it’s like this book was tailor- made for her. Every expression, all the body language, the daydream cutaways. She makes every panel pure magic, with further luxiouriousness added by Paul Mounts.

No matter how critical or skeptical you might be about Before Watchmen, put your feelings aside and read this book. Then prepare to buy the next issue. Because you will.

  1. Wow! Shocked that the CBR reviewer feels there’s not much substance. To me, it’s the LIFE, the relationship between mother and daughter and how that relationship impacts their interactions with others that is the substance.

Maybe it’s just because I’m a parent, but to me, Silk Spectre drew back the curtain on the “realities” of superhero family… and it is both familiar and heart- wrenching.

    To each their own though.
