BATWOMAN #6 is one of those issues that starts in the past and works its way forward. Personally, I’m a fan of using non-linear narrative in all its forms, but it does need to be done well. And this…well, it’s not that it’s done poorly, just that it seems done unnecessarily. This issue feels like a lot of scenes that Williams and Blackman wanted to work into early BATWOMAN issues but couldn’t.

The shift to Amy Reeder on pencils doesn’t really hurt the issue that much, though. Sure, some of JHW3’s incredible layout work is noticeably absent, and the color contrast not as pronounced, but this is still a pretty attractive book, and in the right ways.

What I was hoping for was something that took a little time to transition into Kate working with the DEO – a deal she struck last issue. It’s barely mentioned here. This issue feels almost recappy while recapping very little, but revealing a few things. The scenes by themselves aren’t bad, but the overall effect is…disappointing, and not what the series needed at the moment.
