On the surface, Batwing seems like a throw away character placed into the Batman Universe as a way to shoehorn a minority character into a high profile franchise. Whether this was the intent for his inclusion in the launch of the New 52 is beyond me, but what is evident, after eight issue, is that Judd Winick's Batwing has proven to be a hero that comes across as a complex, interesting protagonist, worthy of his place in DC's new universe.
The Massacre storyline has given the reader a chance to experience the development of an African soldier boy who becomes a superhero, despite his checkered past. With the help of Batman and a host of Bat-family heroes, Batwing, aka David Zavimbe, is able to take on his outward battle with Massacre and Josiah Kone, while, at the same time, come to grips with his internal self-doubt of being a protector of good. This struggle is further complicated after Massacre's identity is revealed to be Isaiah, David's brother.
Winnick brings his eight issue arc to a close with perfection by sharing a past brief moment between David and Isaiah as children. This issue leaves you with a lasting image of a dedicated companion and a glimpse of a future superhero capable of his own title.

Great review. Thanks. I love this book as well.
@ScorpionMasada – Thanks. I only wish there was an edit function. I called David’s brother Isaiah (his name was Isaac).
I love this title as well and look forward to grabbing it each month. I noticed in the March numbers that Batwing came in at #97 in the top 100 titles (18,089 copies sold). Let’s hope it survives the next round of cuts.
i too love this book. i just wish other people would see how good this series is too. i really hope it wont get cut because there are other new dcu titles that deserve to be cut more than this one.
