Winick continues to revamp the idea of Batman in one of the more bold comics of the New 52. The differences between Batman and Batwing are not so much racial but geographical. As corrupt and corrupting as Gotham is, it can never be as dangerous as some of the real world corruption found in areas on the African continent. Genocide, “people’s” armies consisting of children soldiers and completely broken law enforcement systems is the world Batwing inhabits and it makes for a fascinating comic. Batwing is both Batman and Gordon in one as he tries to navigate police corruption as an officer and super-powered criminals as a Dark Knight. Watching this developing hero, who may or may not have the same moral code and resolve that drives Bruce Wayne, keeps the story tense and engrossing. If you want a Bat book that is different than the slew of other Bat books out there but still grounded in Gotham-like tropes, give this book a read.
