Maybe 28 years isn’t that long to be a loyal Batman fan because Kevin Smith Batman stories don’t bother me one bit.  I enjoyed Cacophony too.  I don’t care what you say about it.  It was all just out of continuity fun for me, just like Widening Gyre.

Kevin Smith certainly is no Quentin Tarantino, but I do enjoy a few of his movies.  He is no Paul Dini either, but I do like his take on Batman.  I think the reason he chose to write a Bruce Wayne as Batman story as opposed to a more with the times Dick Grayson as Batman story, is because he wants to write a classic Batman story.  He obviously draws inspiration from runs on Batman from a different time.  Widening Gyre is most definitely not a modern take on the character, and for a lot of people out there, that definitely isn’t a bad thing.

Everybody seems to bash Walter Flanagan’s art because it lacks depth.  I have to admit, I haven’t seen Batman drawn up like that on paper in a long time, but that isn’t the first awkwardly bulkish Batman I have ever seen in a Batman comic.  Anybody who was ever a regular reader of Legends Of The Dark Knight, or even more recent arcs of Batman Confidential, have had to look at depictions of the character that look more amateurish then this does.  It’s not a new approach to draw Batman in a more campy cartoonish style.  The new kid friendly Batman: The Brave And The Bold team up book does it every month.  Besides, Walter Flanagan’s art still looks way better then what Gulliem March put in the pages of Gotham City Sirens this very same month and week!  Now that art look like dog shit.  At least this is cleaner…

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 2 - Average
