When reading comics it can be easy to underestimate the amount of work done by artists. When someone like Frank Quietly or JHW3 does a book the main thing that gets talked about is how unique their style is, but it seems that little discussion goes into how clearly the tell a story. In fact, its the almost unseen way they layout a panel which makes certain stories possible.

Return of Bruce Wayne #4 was a story written assuming a very high level of visual storytelling from the artist. Originally planned to be drawn by, my personal favorite and recently Eisner winner, Cameron Stewart, this story involves a lot of similarly dressed dark haired white guys in an old-timey town with generous use of cutting between scenes. This would require a level of skill not only make the characters distinct but also to breath life into streets lined with non-descript buildings. Unfortunately Cameron Stewart was unable to divide his time between this issue and what I believe is an OGN for the Assassin’s Creed franchise (which not only involved a trip to Moscow for research and undoubtedly involves more money, kinda makes sense that he chose to do that).

Georges Jeanty took over for Stewart and had significantly less time in which to draw the issue. I dont think its fair to call him a bad artist necessarily, but hes not at a level required to make this challenging story work. And as a result, we are left with a confusing story with very minimal emotional weight.

In a way it was an interesting demonstrations of the challenges an artists has to face which would normally go unseen, on the other hand it was $3.99 for a bad comic
