The thing about being a mad genius is, when you do something that is excellent, but neither mad nor genius, you don’t get enough credit. On a first read I thought the story here was kind of blah, because it brought none of the stereotypical Morrison crazy. It was only on the second read that I realized every panel was pitch-perfect in tone; the subtle panels don’t draw attention to themselves and the big panels hit the big story notes. Morrison wants to bring us a Batman like the one who headed the Justice League and punched Guy Gardner in the face; a Batman who is intense, but not grim, someone who plays the role of superhero even if doesn’t have superpowers. Yannick Paqutte’s art is perfect backup for this plan, being bright and descriptive even in scenes set in the shadows. I like this book and will absolutely continue reading.

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 4 - Very Good
