A Kevin Smith mini series was actually finished, and somewhat on time! That alone was cause for celebration. Unfortunately, the comic itself was not also a reason to celebrate. The art by Smith's friend Walt Flannegan was ok. I liked his facial expressions, and the storytelling was straight and to the point. It wasn't anything groundbreaking, but he did have his own style and I did enjoy it.
The story was your basic Batman against psychopath stuff, but I actually have to say that as much as I loved Smith's take on some other characters in the past, I was actually annoyed by his take on the Joker. While I am normally a fan of Smith's writing and I usually love his nods to pop culture, I found Joker making references to movies was wildly out of character. Plus, the big Joker revelation that he does, in fact, want Batman dead, just didn't work for me. joker has had so many chances over the year to kill Batman, that if he truly wanted Batman dead, he would have done so. I also felt Gordon was acting out of character when he tried to get Batman to let joker die. If Gordon wanted to kill Joker, he has had countless opportunities to do so over the years.
All in all, this was a fun title. A nice, straightforward Batman story for those of us who stopped reading during Grant Morrison's pseudo-intellectual run.

I agree, this mini series was a lot of fun. I also agree about the Joker’s revelation being a little strange, as you say he has had countless chances to kill the caped crusader. I didn’t think gordon was acting out of character. Just like Batman he won’t kill a man unless he has to so he would not finish off the Joker himself. However unlike Batman man he has no problem no helping the Joker and watching him die. I had no problem with this scene, it felt right in character to me. I disagree that Morrison’s run was pseudo-intellectual. I think it was more pseudo-comprehensible and, unlike this miniseries, no fun at all.
