Bruce and Damian. Batman and Robin. Father and son. Actually more like absentee father and trained by killers son. To say they have issues is an understatement. But those issues are making for a compelling read.

This issue picks up exactly where the last left off; Damian is running with a bad crowd in the form of Ducard, one of Batman’s old teachers. He’s decided to take Damian under his wing and Damian is happy to get from under his dad’s shadow.

The conflict in this book is the conflcit between a young boy and a father he simultaneously respects and admires. Maybe even loves. But niether person is sure what to do with those feelings. So Bats kind of comes off cold and commanding and Damian naturally rebels. He just happens to have a different outlet than most teens.

That dynamic relationship as written by Tomasi is great. Because Bats is always so rock-solid sure… but now we see he’s on unfamilar ground as a dad. (He may have raised Dick but Damian was a surprise that came out of left field). The art has Gleason doing his usual exmplary work (Look at that final full page where Batman screams Damian’s name and tell me you can’t feel a parent’s rage and frustration.)

Batman by SNyder may set a high bar for the hero alonge, but Batman and Robin has an entirely different flavour and opens up a more personal side of Batman. It’s about family, what that means and all it entails. It just ahppes to have superhero type action in it to.
