This has been a great run by Peter Tomasi and Patrick Gleason. The last two issues has been my pick of the week because they have been action packed and gorgeous to look at. It’s a shame that this run is going to end so abruptly, but more on that later. This issue ends the ‘White Knight’ storyline and while it isn’t perfect, it still is a lot of fun to read.

I do love this new villain with the ‘White Knight’. By making him a beacon of light with wide open eyes you get a lot of mystery and a lot of creepiness to him as well. His method of getting back at the inmates of Arkham is pretty interesting, although it does delegate into a 60’s Batman style of Punishment towards the end. I think Tomasi is also great at handling the relationship with Dick and Damien and with Alfred as well. While there are some clunky moments in here, especially with Dick trying to be witty, it seems like Tomasi has the family aspect of this duo down. The pacing of this issue does seem to be faster then usual. Maybe Tomasi had to rush to get this arc over but in the end it doesn’t detract from the issue too much.

What else can I say about Gleason’s pencils in here that I haven’t said in the last two reviews? His work is just beautiful to look at and he really has a knack with the action. Whether it’s ‘Angels’ falling from the sky to the brutal fight between White Knight and Batman; he doesn’t miss a beat. Alex Sinclair should get a lot of credit for the coloring in this too. Everything is bright and colorful to look at and he takes the idea of White Knight  perfectly. Just look at the cover and you can see what I mean when it comes to the pencils and coloring involved.

It’s such a shame this is the end of Tomasi and Gleason for now. I guess Gleason needs more time to do more issues, but to end this creative team run so soon is such a disappointment. This is everything I want in a Batman and Robin comic with the fantastic action and gorgeous artwork to read every month. It’s going to take a lot for me to not say this has been the best run of the book since the first three issues with Morrison and Quitely. Let’s hope these two come back quickly and not leave us wanting more for long.

Story: 4 - Very Good

  1. Thanks for the review!

  2. part three was definitely the best of the story arc but I’m actually excited about seeing what Winnick is going to bring in with Jason Todd

  3. This run made me drop this book.
