Once again, I feel like I got the cliff notes of a fantastic story.  There’s a lot in here.  Some of it really interesting.  And, yea, yea, yea, Morrison is not a conventional writer, and yea, yea, yea, it’s good to have someone out there who doesn’t write like everyone else.   And, yes, I know, some people read for the cool plot moments, and some read for characters, and we/they can argue for months and months without getting anywhere, because we like different things.  Fine.

What irks me about this series is that Morrison will spend an issue or two making me care about a character and WHY they’re making decisions, and then the next issue will say “character be damned, here’s some cool shit that I may or may not explain later!”

What I like about this issue is Clarke’s art.  It didn’t synch with me in the last issue, but it fell into place here.  I still think his Damian looks significantly older than Quitely’s Damian, but overall, this is a gorgeous book.

  1. I see your point about the character stuff. I can see that it was there more last issue than this issue, definitely. The thing is, I care so much about the plot and mystery that Morrison’s building, that I can’t possibly care about not getting too many character moments. Because character moments, in and themselves, usually don’t advance the plot.

But Damian and Oberon fighting together? And then Damian asking if Oberon is really Bruce? These are the tense moments I want. Nice cute quiet character moments? When Dr. Hurt/El Penitente is bearing down on our heroes with all his demonic goons, and Dick is uncovering a DEMON that Bruce’s ancestors may have worshipped? Who cares about getting cute character moments when that stuff’s right there to deal with?

Just my perspective. I genuinely do see the lack of character moments, and I think it’s a really good and interesting criticism of the run. Morrison definitely isn’t for everybody, and his writing (even when I love it) definitely has deficiencies and strengths and weaknesses.

  2. @flapiaxx great point about Damien asking Oberon if he was Bruce. That was a really great moment.
