Batman is like a carton of milk.

Week Two of the DC relaunch brings us another take on Batman with Peter J. Tomasi’s Batman & Robin #1. Last week we had Tony Daniel batting first and he hit a home run with his Detective Comics #1. Next up to bat is Tomasi, can he deliver? Will it be a home run? A triple? Will he hit a foul?

Nope, it’s a double. Not bad. Not quite a triple, and nowhere near a single. Wait a second!!! And why the fuck am I using Baseball metaphors?!I hate baseball!

Anyway, back to earlier metaphor about that carton of milk. You see, Batman takes on the “taste and smell” of what ever is sitting next to him in the fridge.

Let’s say you head out the store and pick up some fresh Frank Miller. Well, your Batman is going to become monosyllabic and look like a tank.

Perhaps you are running low on Grant Morrison and run out to get some. Once you sit it next to your Batman there in the fridge it will suddenly become God-Like and spout off passages from Milton and Yeats.

Oh, so you were cutting coupons and saw that Scott Snyder is half off this week. Well don’t wait around long, go get some and bring it home. See what just happened to your Batman? It became a little more fun loving and human. You could almost relate to this Batman.

You get my drift. The Batman in Batman & Robin #1 is a totally different Batman form that in Detective Comics #1. And I guess that’s okay because I guess some of the charm of Batman is that he never reads the same way twice.
