“Write to please just one person. If you open a window and make love to the world, so to speak, your story will get pneumonia.”

That is the 7th Tip on how to write a great story by Kurt Vonnegut and hopefully Scott Snyder is reading those tips and not the comments in the “Batman #19” section of iFanboy wherein user Mircowave25 says, “I don’t know why but my interest is beginning to deteriorate with this title. ”

or USPUNX states “Man, I love Batman but I’m just starting to wan on this book little by little since Death of the Family.”

In my opinion Scott Snyder is an excellent writer, something I’ve written about ad nauseum here on these review pages

BATMAN #17

and I enjoy his love for the comic book medium and for the characters he has been tasked with bring to life for us.

When I read Batman as written by Scott Snyder there is a “voice”, a clear connection to the character. Together Snyder and The Dark Knight harmonize on a plane that not many writers can attain.

Batman #19 continues that harmony.

  1. Great review! I completely concur with your take on Scott Snyder’s fine storytelling and his obvious dedication to this medium.

And on an utterly irrelevant note; Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez on Atari Force? ‘Dangit, that was some seriously cool sheeeet.

    • Dude! Atari Force will always be my first love – the one you have the most fondest memories of.

And yeah, Garcia-Lopez is a god

  2. On your suggestion I did read your review of issue 17 (not the first review of yours I’ve read by the way) and then went back and re-read 16 and 17. For some reason they seemed even better than the first time( which was good) even though I knew the ending. It got me thinking how often that happens and maybe my earlier comments were rushed. This issue was really good and just what I needed. Definitely changed my tune and sticking with this. Thanks ghostmann for pulling me back from the brink…that was close. I’ll make sure ” not to let it fucking happen again.”

    • Welcome back hanson724 (funny thing, my last name is Hanson) and thanks for the kind words. Writing these reviews here on iFanboy helps pass the time at work on those long boring days.

If you haven’t read Snyder’s first Batman story a couple of years ago in Detective Comics # 871-881 (before the New 52) also collected in trade now “The Black Mirror” then head out right now and get it. It is by far some of his best work and contains the single best Snyder Batman Comic I’ve ever read (issue # 875. My review of it is here: https://ifanboy.com/reviews/detective-comics-875-4/

      cheers

  3. What was your first Scott Snyder story? I have been reading his work pretty religiously since American Vampire #1 and have either A) been given too much and have hence lost my interest in his writing or B) his writing has lost some of its interest. Rereading the earlier material I side with B. I too wrote a review on Batman 17, and pardon my Apple ignorance, but there are no breaks, but there is not a ton of praise. I also reviewed later issues of AV to the same effect. This issue was cool, the backup was excellent. I’m happy that you love this title and Scott Snyder, but its not that cool to put people down in a review that really didn’t include anything about the issue. I would have rather read what you liked about it (you have written some intelligent reviews) more than how someone else’s opinion about a comic is bad advice.

    • My first Snyder comic was that Detective one I mentioned above, issue 875

And you are getting the wrong idea brother, I didn’t use microwaves and uspunx’ s comments too put people down, only to illustrate the old adage “you can please some people all of the time and all of the people some of the time but you can’t please all of the people all of the time”.

Just head on over to the Batman #19 comments section and you’ll see those dudes and I have already had a pleasant disagreement about the series and no one put anyone down. I in fact state that I encourage the passion we comic book nerds have and would never mock anyone for having a different opinion – I just use the F word a lot. 🙂

    • It seems like the majority of people love this book. You can see it in the pulls and the comments, so apparently he’s pleasing lots of folks (as he should, he’s a very talented writer), but I wonder how many readers have been exposed to his earlier work. I really miss what his run on Detective had. I think that is his best work to date, and arguably the best run on a Batman title in 20+ years. It’s funny because the New 52 dropped right on the heels of that run, and “Batman” underwhelmed me at the start because I just wanted more of “that”. Since then it has only partially delivered for me (shame on me, really, but he set the bar so high), and has been very up and down, with DOTF being a frustrating disappointment.

If everyone is kosher with being quoted as what not to listen to than “nerd power”. No character arouses more affection than Batman and with that come strong opinions. I appreciate all of it. I like to believe that critique on these sort of forums can only make the comics better (especially with a character I’m as invested in as Batman-I WANT a good Batman book, I can drop F4 and not care a lick), and that is why I have a negative reaction to things like your opening comments here. A little more explanation accompaning “It sucks” would be better, but hey, people are busy. Have a great month and I’ll see you on the board for #20.
