Broken brick-work smashes out of panel edges as Batman crashes like a wrecking ball through Gotham City in Batman #18. There's rips and tears all over his costume and his cape hangs in tatters from his shoulders. Whether intentional or otherwise, Batman is pictured with his head bowed time and time again in this issue. In one panel, the snarl on his face mirrors the thug he's attacking. All of his composure and superiority is gone, replaced with chaos. Hot on the Bat's heels is Harper Row. Since we last saw Harper, she's upped her game and is now sporting a catsuit complete with a belt felt of gadgets, though she's yet to find a mask or a snappy superhero name. In this issue, we see a little more of the Row family as Harper and her brother visit their father in Blackgate Penitentiary. He's been in jail so many times that the Row siblings have to ask, "Why this time?" There's been a lot of speculation that Harper will become the next Robin - or at least a new member of the Bat-family - and for some people, this issue might feel like conformation of that. Certainly, a lot of time is spent on adding depth to Harper's character and to her relationship with Batman. Harper's background and motivations feel convenient and all too familiar at times, but the character isn't obnoxious to read by any means. Though there's every chance that Harper was only able to track Batman so easily because he's still reeling from the loss of Damian and isn't taking even basic precautions to hide his whereabouts, there's no disputing the fact that she handles herself well in a fight and that she somehow strikes an emotional chord with Batman by the end of the issue. It's safe to say that we'll be seeing more of Harper Row in the future.
