Understand that this issue really is NOT the start of the next storyline, but is really more of a stand alone issue..

I guess Cloonan’s art is just not my preferred style. I much more enjoyed Florea’s art in the last portion of the issue.

Story-wise, I think Snyder did a great job establishing Harper and her brother’s relationship, Harper’s character. Plus, their interaction with Batman and her ensuing sleuthing was well written.

But I felt all that nifty storytelling was shortchanged with the sewer scene and the overly simply “don’t give up on yourself”-Now You Know moral of the story. It was too easy.

IF, IF Snyder brings Harper back again I will be very happy and I will revise my rating of this issue.

She could add some texture to Snyder’s current Gotham.

So, not bad at all, in fact the story was quite good–but not without some bumps. I have learned throughout the first 11 issues of Batman that I should give Snyder some room.

  1. I’m pretty sure Harper is not a one-off character. She had a very brief unnamed appearance in issue 5 or 6. I’m guessing she’s involved in the Joke storyline in some way, hence the “next arc starts here!” marketing.
