There’s so much hatred for the original Azrael. I happen to think the original is pretty interesting. But considering he was involved with one of the most over hyped event in DC’s history…I can see where the venom is coming from.

This new Azrael, however, is one hundred percent more interesting then Jean Paul Valley. That is, he is more interesting when he is barely talking. Last issue suffered from Michael Lane talking like a gangsta rapper at certain points. Azrael is much more interesting when he is a brooding, silent figure. Only quoting the bible when he is about to excert justice. In this issue, Lane’s alter rapper ego is no where to be seen. Just as a faux Batman and as a lonely christain man, there is so much that can be done with this character. I was interested from page one of this issue. From surreal moments as a batsuit talking to random objects in the batcave; to Lane talking to his new partners, I loved where this issue is taking us. Considering now it seems the new Azrael will be battling Ra’s Al Ghul its good to see Azrael wont be fighting D level villains.

The painted feel to Irvings pencils/colors make this series all the more interesting. Every issue has had a beginning splash page that looks absolutely gorgeous. (This issue was no difference) It must be a pain to have this type of art style, cause everything has to be detailed but not look muddy. Some of the faces of his characters can look a bit weird, especially that cop who helped Lane out towards the end. But overall I like the style of Irving and when the ongoing series comes along….I hope he’s the artist.

Speaking of which; this issue claims there is an ongoing Azrael series coming out in the Fall. So excited for this to happen. Again Azrael is an interesting and dynamic character and there is so much writers could do with this religious angle. If this mini series proved anything, Azrael could be one of the best characters DC could offer. Hopefully the same creative team that gave us this wonderful mini will be the same creative ongoing team.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 5 - Excellent
