This miniseries exists to flesh out the individual fights between X-Men and Avengers that the main event comic doesn’t have room to cover. This issue is divided into two bouts, the first being Magneto vs. Iron Man and the second Namor vs. The Thing. To my mind, a fight scene should illustrate something more than just action; character should be expanded upon, or an interesting aspect of a character’s powers should be revealed. In the Jason Aaron written Magneto vs. Iron Man bout, we find out that Magneto’s powers have been amped up even more ridiculously over the years than we thought. Now, he can reach out across the cosmos, and draw power from the magnetic fields of other planets. He can sense when the Phoenix wipes out life on a planet light years away. Several years ago, we saw Magneto reach out across the galaxy to bring back the bullet that Kitty Pryde was trapped on. Come to think of it, what’s the big deal about the Phoenix? Didn’t Magneto single handedly defeat Jean Grey as Phoenix at the end of Grant Morrison’s run on “New X-Men?” Somehow, he shorted out her powers. I guess he just got lucky. The fact that Tony Stark can build his armor out of carbon nanotubes is kind of an interesting idea, but on the whole, this fight is more absurd than illuminating. The second bout is written by Kathryn Immonen, and it is quite a bit more down to earth, or down in the ocean, as a matter of fact. The Thing challenges the Sub-Mariner on his “home turf” so to speak, and manages to come out on top. We encounter a conveniently placed sunken treasure and sea monster along the way. I am surprised that The Thing can keep up with Namor under water, since the Sub-Mariner is supposed to have Hulk level powers in his own realm. I guess The Thing also gets lucky in a battle that is nothing special, just a meat and potatoes comic slugfest. Pencils for this issue are by Adam Kubert and Stuart Immonen, and neither are a revelation, but both get the job done.
