I'll start with an admission - I gave up on AvX after issue 2 and am only now returning to it after reading a few positive reviews. How disappointed I was to discover that, other than an improvement on the art front, very little has changed and my principal gripe still remained. Many have commented on characters acting in a distinctly unheroic manner and it's old news, I suppose, but it still really bothers me. These are supposed to be "superheroes", the clue is in the name. Yet they are so fixated on fighting each other that the villains of the Marvel U must be laughing their heads off. I can imagine them sitting at home on a pile of their ill-gotten gains, waiting for a knock (or smash) on the door that never comes. By now they've probably tired of spending their loot on fast cars, weapons and gadgets and are finally getting round to starting work on that extension over the garage. It seems that Cyclops can't get from one panel to the next without contradicting himself. One minute he seems all for wiping the Avengers off the map and sends teams of high-powered X-Men to do just that. Then a few pages later he's chastising Namor for wanting to take them out, claiming they have to "get along" with those who don't share their views. The Avengers also seem to be struggling to match their words and deeds. Upon giving the team their Amulets of Thingamebobbins (I don't have the comic in front of me), Doctor Strange is very clear that they should only be used when absolutely necessary. Then what happens? They all go out and use them straight away! The art in this issue, however, is pretty good, aside from a few weird inconsistencies, like the fact that Hope appears to suddenly look about 12 years old. The last two pages are beautiful and earned this comic an extra star in my view.
