[In the voice of Barney from The Simpsons] “It begiiins!” I have been reading Marvel comics for about 2 years now, but I’m still not caught up on all the Marvel mythos. Apparently 99% of mutants are all depowered and there are 3 Ant/Giant Men. Part one of AvX should be titled “The Discovery” because it’s all about both the Avengers and X-Men learning the Phoenix is coming, or it has already arrived. I got a first in this issue in seeing Thor say, “Avengers Assemble!” which I thought was great. I don’t hate John Romita Jr.’s art, but I think some characters look blocky at times. I actually think he draws the X-Men better than the Avengers. The story gets right to the point. With the Avengers, they want to stop the Phoenix from doing whatever it’s planning. With the X-Men, Scott’s still kinda a militant dick and he wants Hope to embrace the Phoenix and save the mutant race. There were no missed shots in this issue that I could find, but Marvel has been known to hit a homerun on the first couple issues then choke on the end. Hopefully when the Street Fighter style fighting begins the bar will be raised even higher.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 3 - Good
