Christos Gage is a fan and student
of the Might Marvel Mythos who is updating the house style with his own brand
of hyper realism. How many times have we
seen the Avengers battle a villain who captures them, only to have the team
escape and beat his tuchas? I’ll give
you some hints. Dr. Doom did it. Graviton did it. Ultron did it more than once. In this comic, Gage dispenses with the
formula. The Sinister Six whip the
Avengers Academy kids good, and then escape with what they were stealing. This is a realistic outcome given the
Avengers Academy’s inexperience, and the Sinister Six’s long years of practice
at villainy. I suspect that somewhere
down the road, perhaps five to ten issues hence, we will see the Avengers
Academy have a rematch with the Six, and triumphantly beat the villains down. But that is not going to happen next
issue. In the past, we have seen
Spider-Man labeled a “menace to society” due to J. Jonah Jameson’s personal
psychosis. In this comic, the failure of
Avengers Academy prompts a realistic reaction from a government and the media
who both turn against the Academy. The
Academy kids were whipped in Paris, and an angry French official tells Hank Pym
to get out of town. The media says that
the Sinister Six would never have been able to defeat the adult Avengers. I like the twist in the motivations of
Stryker, one of the Academy students. He
reiterates in this issue that he does not see superheroism, as a matter of
altruism, but rather a career move. One
aspect of the plot that struck me as problematic is how easily Tigra is taken
out by Electro. How many times has
Spider-Man been zapped by Electro? I
never remember him being knocked out with one shock, and Tigra, as a were-cat,
should be more resilient than Spidey, who may be only somewhat more durable
than a normal human. I also wonder if
Jocasta will ever join the team out in the field. She would have a lot to offer in battles
against many super villains.
I have enjoyed Sean Chen’s pencils
since I first saw them when he worked for the late Valiant comic book
company. My philosophy is that most
superheroes, and super villains as well, should be eye candy. Chen never disappoints in this regard. His Tigra is voluptuous, and his Giant-Man is
beefy. Sean Chen used to draw great
robots for “Rai and the Future Force.” I
wish he would do a redesign for Jocasta, who could use a new look. Chen draws facial expressions, even subtle
expressions, well. Giant-Man looks
appropriately abashed when the French official is chewing him out.
