There are more original comics out this week, one's with greater vision and more challenging ideas. However, I'd wager this is one of the most purely enjoyable. I was one of those people who read the 1959 storyline in New Avengers and hoped for Marvel to give Chaykin free reign with the concept, and I really wasn't disappointed.
I should point out that I love Chaykin's work and follow it pretty much wherever it turns up, especially his art. When he's doing both you can't keep me away. The story in this mini is exactly what it says on the tin. The team hunts more superpowered Nazi war criminals, and most of issue one is focussed on attempts to dispatch each individual member of the team before starting to bring them back together for the mission to come.
Chaykin loves the past, particularly the various periods of the twentieth century, and refreshingly he never paints those times through rose tinted glasses. They weren't more innocent times, they were tough and full of conflict. His men are men and his women are most certainly women, but women that are able to hold their own against the men. This comic has a scrappy, brutal elegance to it, stunningly designed and filled with period detail. The characters are often savage and violent, yet the surroundings and the costumes they wear are always immaculately rendered in keeping with the times they represent. A Chaykin book looks and reads like no other and even thought this is rooted firmly in the Marvel U we've come to know, this is firmly and resolutely a Chaykin book.
In short, Chaykin does what he always does. If you've never warmed to his style then, New Avengers fan or not, you'd probably be wise to steer clear. If you love the man's work as I do then this is everything you know you wanted and more. Strap in for the ride.
Oh, and should you still be undecided, there's a whole scene with Dominic Fortune flying a plane and fending off his attacker wearing what appears suspiciously to be a silk dressing gown and slippers! What more need I say?
