After having a few comics that I expected to be bad to average turn out to be quite good, I suppose the laws of a fair and balanced universe means that one that I was looking for would be a steaming turd.  And this comic is it.

A tie-in to the Avengers Next straight-to-DVD movie?  Really?  Conceptually, this is crap.  I also have a hard time believing Bendis wrote this.  He has his on days and off days, but this doesn’t feel like his work at all.  I mean, ok, there’s a gazillion word balloons lining the sides of many-a-page, and that’s Bendisy, but the humor here is training bra flat, and the characters are completely two-dimensional.

What I don’t have a hard time believing is that Romita JR drew this.  The first two pages are straight out of Kick-Ass.  And, after that…well, it just didn’t click as being Avengerly.  Maybe if the writing had been better, I could have gone along with it, but, as is?  I challenge you to look at the main cover and not think Thor: Mongoloid Of Thunder.

Please never say ‘fair and balanced’ again!

Glenn Beck paid me fifty bucks to say that.  Oh, and "Nazi"!  Damn it, I forgot to say "Nazi".

Thanks, akamuu.  I was on the fence with this one, but I will not be getting it now.  I tie-in to a straight-to-DVD movie?  Sheesh!

@akamuu, how does this compare to Fallen Sun?

  7. vadamowens vadamowens says:

    wow. below the belt

@Jordanlyall, Hey thats not called for. I have fond memories of the Sentry taking me to see Ghostbusters for the first time.

  9. benjamin74 says:

Are you sad that Sentry’s not in this?

  10. When I first read the synopsis of the first arc I thought this was a joke. After seeing the art and reading the dialogue I still think it is a joke. Taking everything offered from Siege#4 to this I realize something, Bendis is f**cking with comic fans.

    Avengers Next, really????????

  11. how is this a tie-in to the next straight to DVD movie? also, Marvel has a straight to DVD movie coming out? This issue underwhelmed me, but it didnt fill me with the bloodcurdling rage that some commenters seem to have. But then again, im in a good mood cos I found some photos of the time I went to Disneyland with the Sentry. Best birthday ever!

  12. "Next Avengers" was a straight to DVD movie featuring the offspring of dead Avengers being hidden from ……………just take my word for it, very weak stuff. Even kids thought it was weak.

@jordanlyall: It’s difficult to compare the two.  I mean, one comic was the funeral for the defining character in the Marvel Universe, the other is just some second rate team book they put out.  If they truly cared about The Avengers, they wouldn’t put some nobody like Bendis on it.

@Scioli54: I was there when The Sentry introduced Bobby Brown and Whitney Houston.  The man had a gift.

@CaptainSweatpants: I’m not even entirely sure Bendis wrote this.  A lot of the dialog seems "by committee".

@incredibledave: Do you remember back when The Sentry used to bring all those kids to Neverland Ranch to play with the llamas?  Man, do I miss that guy.

  14. vadamowens vadamowens says:

Oh, its the joke that keeps on giving.

Great review. I’m not sure that you were tough enough on the art – it was horrible. It distracted from the little bit of a story that did take place. A very disappointing book.
