This title was so close to not sucking, that it kind of hurt to read.  But I kept reading, anyway.  Because it’s Warren Ellis.  And it’s the X-Men.  But it just wasn’t entertaining.

I”m not sure why you bother using Forge as a villain, in a comic with Storm it, and you don’t play the relationship card at all.  Was Mr. Ellis unaware of their near marriage in the early 90s?  Such a missed opportunity.  Also, his one-liners were really flat.  I know that Whedon packed Astonishing with hip quips and lots of camera winks, but Ellis isn’t good at it, and shouldn’t try it.  Forge telling Emma “I didn’t recognize you with your legs shut.”?  What is he, a fourth grader?

Also, someone needs to take Bianchi off X-titles.  He’s a talented artist, and great with layouts, but his style just doesn’t work with the X-Men.  At all.  The faces all come off creepy.  Storm looks like a giraffe.  The shiny eyes are kind of cool, but they’re essentially sweet detailing on a luxury car that’s clearly too small for the person driving it.

  1. I thought Ellis’s dealt with the Forge/Storm thing adequately.  When a woman is done with you, she is done with you.  It did take him too long to get to the Forge/Storm conversation, though.

Also, Ellis is very good at one-liners, usually.

  2. I must have missed the conversation.  As for the one liners, I find him hit or miss.  And he’s been missing big on this title.  Basically, swinging when the ball is fifty feet away from the plate.  I think he needs to stick to his creator owned titles right now, as he’s absolutely nailing most of the ones I’m reading.

  3. I agree with you about Bianchi – he is not well-matched to this title.

  4. I’m with ultimatehoratio on the relationship thing. If I’m involved in some life or death situation with my ex-wife, I’m not suddenly going to blurt out "but we were once married! Doesn’t that mean anything?" Nah, I’ll deal with the situation at hand. Not everything is about the old relationship. I thought when they did cover it, they did it it just about right.

Re: Bianchi — well, he’s off and Phil Jimenez is on. So there’s that. (I tended to like Bianchi and the different style he brought to this stuff.)

  5. I’m excited about Jimenez taking over.  And I hope Bianchi starts working on another title.  Again, I think he’s incredibly talented, it just doesn’t work for me on an X-title.  I felt the same way about Bachalo during Morrison’s run, and since then, he’s gone on to become onf of my favorite artists.

As for the relationship thing, I guess I’ve got to go back and reread the issue because I didn’t see it acknowledged at all.  I wasn’t looking for a melodramatic: "Oh Forge, I loved you, you hurt me, and now I gotta bring thunder down on your punk ass."  It sounds like he did exactly what I wanted, and I just missed it.
