This reminds me very much of the parts of Morrison's New X-Men run that I liked the least- creating weird and grotesque scenarios just because. Forge's "New Mutants" are absolute afterthoughts when all's said and done, and they seem to be made to look outrageous just because. Were they human? Did Forge's engineering make them monstrous? Did they come from another dimension like the enemy they were made to fight? And who just was this enemy? Agent Brand seemingly does away with them with a big "zettawatt laser," or at least Beast presumes she does. And finally, this to me was a wasted use of a character with such great history with the X-Men- Forge. Yes, Ellis hints at Forge's stint in Vietnam, and he hints at his relationship with Storm, but that's all he does: hints. I could forgive him for not using the first detail, but the second? That would have been a major payoff for including Storm in the first place when she's not normally a part of this group and seems to be thrown in at random. I hope that this arc is not indicative of what Ellis is planning on doing with this book, because I may have to drop it. Likewise, I'm not a huge fan of the Simone Bianchi art. I can see liking it on some other project, but it just doesn't fit superheroic action. The fight scene was very crowded and limited. I did like the close-up on Forge's face, though, which is why I think I would like this on any book other than this.
