I give this a 3/5. Some intriguing ideas and interesting artwork, but
the layouts felt (ineffectively) disorienting to me, and the
dialogue... wow... so much tedious exposition. ("Alien spacecraft have
been dropping on earth for decades. I mean, they've been arriving since
way before that, it turns out. But these days it, seems like one a
week. What's more, they used to, you know, land. Now, they usually get
blown out of the sky by someone.") Zzzzzz. I like Armor, but get her
out of the series if half of every issue is just going to be the others
explaining what's going on to her. And in my opinion, all these
edgy/jokey comments about how naughty it supposedly is for Cyclops to
have sex with Emma Frost... that stuff should have worn out by now.
(She could sleep with her boots on in my bed anytime, but reading so many words devoted to her sex life and sex appeal can get tiring in a hurry. It made tons of sense to foreground this stuff when Cyc and her first got together, and when she went crazy in "Torn" and the relationship was questioned, but now it feels less fresh than reading a description of Wolverine as "the best there is at what he does, but what he does isn't pretty.")
On the positive side, I like the set-up of this mission. It's nice to see Storm return. I do like Armor and sense that there's still room for her to develop as a character. Ellis really knows how to write intriguing science concepts, and the idea of artificially engineered mutants is a good one. I've never read much of Ellis's stuff, and this issue does make me want to finally read Transmetropolitan--because I liked the writing and concepts in this issue of X-Men alright, but I know this isn't Ellis operating at his peak. Bianchi's art is neat to look at, for now, but time will tell if he'll be able to do action sequences. Bianchi's got real talent but I don't know if he knows sequential storytelling all that well, or if his style and experimental layouts will lend themselves to this story. For what it's worth, I could apply those same criticisms to Joe Mad, who's one artist whose books I'd buy no matter what because I love his style so much. For now, this Bianchi stuff is neat to look at, and I enjoyed this.
I hope some of this will improve with the second issue. For me the honeymoon's pretty much over with the X-Titles. After being away from them for a decade, I got back into them on a "monthly" basis with Whedon and Cassaday's Astonishing, and started picking up the other titles again out of interest/boredom (yes, "interest/boredom" is exactly how I'd describe it), but now as of the Uncanny #500 event they're all on the chopping block again. So Astonishing #26 will be make or break for whether I follow this series or not.
