All I ask from a comic is that is give me visuals that I like to look at and story that pulls me through the narrative. This issue is a great example that, of comics done well — in my humble opinion. From the panel to panel pacing, creative cross cutting narrative that switches between two points in time, coloring, inking, character costumes (like the Atlantian army), interesting character development and layering (talking to his dad about his incentives), etc., etc., and on and on. I could write a novel about anyone of these points but I won’t bore you (or me) with it. The bottom line for me is that I picked this book up, was immediately transfixed, swept away into a magical realm where sea army men fly, mysterious dolphin sonar black boxes exist, and our trident carrying hero struggles not only to survive, but also to deal with the inner demons of his own life choices. All of which are completely in-line with the character’s original roots and origin (I think, right, Tom?). And it all starts with a simple four frame page of a man drawn no bigger than a stick figure, falling, falling, falling, THOOMM! I’m engrossed and in for a ride.
