I have mixed views on this issue. I think for the art alone it will be remembered as a classic, and so it should. Martin’s opening sequence beautifully captured the day of a funeral. The feeling of loss was obvious, and even though the funeral is for a character the audience may not be overally fimilarly with we can feel Jonah and Peter’s sorrow thanks to the great work by the artist. If Amazing Spider-man was a monthly book Martin would be my vote for regular artist.

As for the rest, I think my enjoyment of the story will depend on the second chapter more than this as I found the message of the story to be a little confusing. The dearly departed seem to be convincing Spider-man he is a killer and should take a more offensive approch to defending the innocent, where as Uncle Ben seems to frown on this. When Peter makes his vow at the end of the issue, I was unsure whose advise he’d taken on board. If I’ve misunderstood the story please feel free to correct me the comments section. The book seemed to be preparing me for Peter to take drastic measures to save the bank, and that’s not really what I’m looking for in Spider-man….so really my enjoyment of this story will depend on its conclusion next week, or whenever it’s due.

Story: 3 - Good
Art: 5 - Excellent
