While not, in itself, a bad issue, this is a step and a half down from the last few.  The beginning reads like Spiderman stepped into the midst of a Batman story, and that was great fun.  But it sort of fizzles in the middle.  Again, not awful, but disappointing given the previous three arcs.

  1. I’m honestly not enjoying Gauntlet much at all.  I know I sound like a dork for saying this, but I didn’t start reading Amazing Spidey until Brand New Day started, and that’s what got me into reading it three weeks a month since then.  Now it seems like everything from BND is going out the window somehow, and I’m just not liking it.  Everybody else is probably thinking exactly the opposite though!

  2. Hmm…I liked this better than the Sandman issues but yeah last issue is going to be hard to top.

  3. @robby: I’m not a fan of bringing back old characters for the sake of bringing back old characters.  I, too, enjoyed the first few BND arcs more than I enjoyed old Spidey stories.  But I’ve really been liking the depth that the Spidey Crew have given the old villains in these new storylines.  And I’m hoping they will somehow tie into the earlier arcs.

@cubman: The Sandman issues weren’t my favorite, either.  And it’s possible the Mysterio/Negative Man storyline will end up being better as a whole, but this single issue just didn’t grab me.  You’re absolutely right on that the last issue is going to be very difficult to outdo.

  4. Not reading this, but just chiming in to say that I enjoyed the first year or so of BND issues (the ones I read, at least) than I have the ones since.

I like the idea of bringing back old Spidey villains within one arc, though. There’s kind of a long-standing precedent with that stuff going back the the Sinister Six, then the Return of the Sinister Six, etc etc.

I still keep up with what’s going on with Spidey, so I’ve had my feelers out about this arc. Some people seem to really like it, others don’t. With Marcos Martin art…I feel like the guy was a blast the first few times I saw him–and he’s still a good artist, obviously–but it’s no longer a "gimme" in my book. Actually the one thing I really dislike about BND is that you barely get one artist on a single arc. Just throwing guys like Martin on random issues doesn’t really serve that much of a cogent purpose.
