So I’m one of the apparently few people who has actually been enjoying the “Who Was Ben Reilly” arc. Granted, it has not been the most mind blowing Spider-man story I’ve ever read, but I enjoyed the somewhat nostalgic story and the reemergence of Ben Reilly in a Spider-man story. Heck, I even liked the reemergence of Kaine. This issue is the conclusion of the three part arc, and while far from perfect, I think that it did a fairly good of wrapping up the storyline.
I’ll start with the not so good aspects of this issue. For one, the cover is borderline terrible. It just looks bad and I’m not sure what is going on with Kaine, who seems to be shooting red beams out of his hands…? Also, the art inside the book is not so good. A few people had complained about not being able to distinguish between Damon and Ben in the first two issues, but I had not had that problem until this issue. It apparently was a problem for Guggenheim as well as it seemed that Ben and Damon said each others names way too much, maybe just to clarify who they were for the reader? Or maybe I imagined that….but I did find it more confusing to tell the characters apart this time around. The pages are also very busy, and it seems that they were trying to cram a lot into this last issue. You almost get the feel they intended for this to be a longer arc but cut it down to three issues and had to compensate by cramming this lots of pictures into one book, and somewhat rushing the story a little bit in the last issue.
The good aspects of the issue, for me, are the same things that I’ve liked about the other two issues. I like Kaine as a villain and I like the way he was used in this issue. Granted I don’t think anyone was shocked to find out he, along with Damon himself, was responsible for the wife and kid being killed. What I liked about it was that Kaine more or less lets the tragedy come back to haunt Peter, though it was originally intended to haunt Ben. I also like the no-nonsense attitude he has since he knows who Peter is. I was not sure how to feel about Spider-man’s identity being revealed to Raptor at first, but base on the last page, I’m pretty sure we can assume that Kaine finishes Raptor off. I also appreciated the remarks commenting on characters looking like they are from the ‘90s in this issue, since there is definitely a very 1990s feel to this arc. As I mentioned before, this issue did seem a bit rushed, however, I feel that it nicely wrapped up everything that happened in this arc. Kaine does not really have a reason to go after Peter again (though he probably will at some point), Raptor is dead, and Peter can get off without having to explain too much to Harry and his cousins. The destruction of Aunt May’s house will probably be something that comes up in future issues, but that’s nothing new to a Spider-man story. So overall, it was a decent issue to wrap up this arc. I imagine that if you did not like the first two issues of this arc you will probably not like this issue either. If you did like the first two, then you might enjoy it more.
