The first issue of All-Star Western showed that Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray didn’t lose a step with Jonah Hex. Even with a brand new setting, it’s the same old Hex we grew to love (or hate) from before. In this issue we learn a little more on what Hex and Arkham will be dealing with as antagonists and we get a massive gun fight as a treat. The only problem I had with this issue is that it is the first time the less page count affected me. It felt like the story ended a bit too abruptly for my liking. But other then that it’s a solid read.

Now the biggest problem I had with this issue is the art by Moritat. Don’t get me wrong, it is a good looking issue for the most part. I mean the two page sequence of Hex fighting all of the Crime Bible goons was amazing. But the problem with that sequence is that the panel layout is confusing to follow. I just couldn’t figure out where some of panels ended where. Also the coloring seemed a bit different. Last issue had this light red hue to it. That is completely gone for a more standard use of coloring which kinda lost some of the magic for me. I mean again, it’s still a good looking issue but it could have been a bit more tighter.

Oh and I almost forgot! The back up with Jordi Bernet was a nice way to end the issue. It feels so good to see Bernet back on a Hex book and even though it’s about El Diablo, it was a lot of fun to read and look at. Love it we’re going to have two Western stories from now on.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 3 - Good

  1. I didn’t have any problem with the art – which I *love* – but otherwise I agree with your review. I am loving this title, and the first backup story with El Diablo was a real treat. All-Star Western is such a comfortable read; I wish I could stretch out by a campfire and take in issue #3 right now!
