Once again this series has that off again/on again mentality. Last issue (not the zero issue) was pretty mediocre and it makes me wondering if I should keep continuing. But with this issue? There’s more than enough to love that it makes me almost forget my qualms of this series.

If Moritat could draw tigers in every issue I would be happy. (If he could team up with Ivan Reis’s sharks then we have a series!) The art this time around was very consistent and there was a lot to love here. The huge fight sequence with the White Ghost was handled very well and you can feel the impact on those punches/kicks. Then you have a swarm of tigers fighting Hex and Tallulah which made me happy Moritat was drawing this. His pencils also look a lot cleaner this go around which frustrates me a bit. If only Moritat could keep this pace going month in and out. Cause then I wouldn’t be so frustrated with this month in and out.

This series still doesn’t feel like a Palmiotti and Gray comic to me. Sure there’s Hex and all of this violence but it just doesn’t feel the same. But they try their best to entertain us with the fighting and tiger mauling. The overall story though with this is still boring to me. I don’t care about Hex in Gotham and now they’re gonna do this whole magic story involving a stupid DC characters….UGH! So frustrating.

You know what feels like Palmiotti and Hex? The back ups! I wanna see them do an anthology series of all these western characters. Sure that isn’t a big seller to many but with this back up you see the old Palmiotti and Gray we used to read. I always love to read about the other side of the Native American plight during the early days of our country. (Mostly because so many people today still gloss over how we just fucked them over.) Anyways, this story with Tomahawk is just brutal and it is fun to read but also frustrating cause I’m sure this happened in some shape or form. The art by Phil Winslade is what makes this back up for me though. His painted style (which he colored too) really makes it feel timely. He also doesn’t hold back on the violence which helps with a brutal story like this.

At the end of the day, this is another frustrating issue of All-Star Western. Mainly because it is a pretty damn good issue and I can’t figure out why each issue can’t be this good. The overall story isn’t that interesting but what’s here in this issue is. Maybe this series should be more outlandish fighting instead of talking because that’s all this series is good at this point. But the back up really showcases how Palmiotti and Gray still have it when it comes to the western setting. If anything, this series still shows consistently why they get the best artists every single month.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 5 - Excellent

  1. I love this series but I too will be glad when Hex goes back to the West …and not the future (DC , are you listening ?)
