Before the god’s of Geoff Johns and Grant Morrison, Superman was in bit of a pickle. Okay maybe a huge crisis, let’s face it, not a whole lot of good stories came from his Action Comics and Superman titles. There were some good elseworlds tales and animated versions, but in terms of comics….eh not so much. But then one of the gods put his hand on a new title, and gave everyone a reason why Superman is such a great character to begin with.

Morrison is giving us Superman’s ‘last’ tale, he’s dying after being exposed to the sun for too long. From this trade and the eventual second, we see the last couple of month of the Man of Steel and how he wants to make the world perfect before he goes. Morrison is great with this story, it’s turning out to be one of my favorites. From hanging out with a super-powered Lois, to a huge battle with Jimmy Olsen, and to my favorite story of Clark Kent interviewing a soon to be executed Lex Luthor. All of these stories add much emotional weight to Sups condition, but there is also a good amount of humor thrown in.

Frank Quitely has been around forever, and has done a lot of works with Morrison. Most of you might know him from New X-Men, who added a much bizarre style to the new mutants of that run. Now here’s why I’m a little iffy if that man’s art: It’s too ugly. No matter what I saw of his work, much of the people he drew were a bit too ugly. It’s somewhat the same case here cause when we zoom in on people…the faces are all dark, and wrinkly, and their eyes are just weird. It’s also the case with some of the monsters here, like Parasite, they look like something out of a nightmare. But in this series I dont mind it so much cause it is more of a futuristic tale of Sups, so it can look ridiculous if it wants too. Quitely is great with the landscapes, and the fight scenes…but those face problems still sorta exsist.

So aside from a little nitpick of the art, I still love this story. It will go gone as one of the best Superman tales of all time in my mind. I just cannot wait til this goes into an omnibus cause it will look even more fantastic then a regular trade. But hey this is a cheap $13 volume, so why not go for it? You’ll be entertained with it no matter what version it is.

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 4 - Very Good

  1. This series and Geoff Johns’ Action comics I think are going to go down as the quintessential Superman stories for me.  This book is chock full of beautiful scenes that ellicit heartbreak, hope and all the post-modern glory of the Silver Age.  I cannot reccomend this title enough.  It’s a wonderful time to be a fan of the man of steel.

  2. i personally think that aside from gary frank quitely does the best Lois in modern comics.

  3. A masterpiece.
