I see a lot of talk around the internet right now comparing this with DC's Infinite Crisis and the Superboy Prime punch heard 'round the multiverse. While it certainly has a similar overall effect of allowing Marvel to tweak with aspects of their continuity without restarting the whole thing from scratch, I see Age of Ultron as a more elegant, and thus successful, effort at such. The break in time-space is not only more logical (time-streams are just better pseudoscience than glass reality-walls) but it was also earned by the story. Both Wolverine and Ultron used time travel liberally as a weapon, and thus it makes sense that the time-stream would at least crack a bit, as opposed to the super-punch which basically came out of nowhere and stank of editorial shenanigans. I think another aspect of the negative reaction comes from the fact that so much of these final points have been spoiled long ago. I think we would all enjoy many of these storylines much more if we came into them utterly ignorant, but sadly this would involve sacrificing basically all of comics journalism. Angela might have been a real mind-blowing revelation had we not heard about her before the event even began. All in all the fact that Bendis was able to bring this whole crazy monster together in a fairly logical well written manner deserves a degree of praise. Some of the art, particularly some character's faces could have used some work, but it was serviceable and did its job well. Sure it could have either been a bit shorter or otherwise less decompressed, but it told a good story and established a new and interesting aspect of the Marvel status quo, so I'm happy.
