After the New Krypton story wrapped a few months ago, I jumped off the Superman titles because I just didn’t want to have to be committed to several Superman titles per month. My pocket book just couldn’t support it. But then I started hearing really good things about this guy Rucka, and the bang up job he was doing on Action Comics and New Krypton. So, I decided to check them out, and I have to grudgingly admit, it was damn good comics. This issue picks up right where the last left off, and it starts with this simply wonderful fight between Thara and Ursa. What makes the fight so great is that as the fight goes on, Ursa breaks down how a soldier fights and how a good soldier uses fear and anger to fight an opponent. It’s this really nice stream of consciousness that really shows just how crazy and scary Zod’s soldiers can be. I found these pages completely gripping and engaging, and I found myself drawn to this mentality. It seemed like words you would normally find in a Batman book, and yet it was so refreshing to see them on the pages of Superman comic. I also really liked how the fight was ended, and what repercussions it may hold for the characters.

The art was pretty good as well, although I admit its not quite my favorite style. The paneling and storytelling where pretty dynamic. I think my one beef with the art was that the people fighting seemed really detailed, with thick lines and dark inks, but when the book cuts to Lois and Jimmy, they seem to have a more cartoony look to them. I don’t know. Maybe it was just me. Either way, the art was good, and if this is the team that’s going to draw it, there’s certainly could be worse choices. It’s just a taste thing.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 3 - Good

  1. An Action Comics issue that actually sounds interesting… Hmm.

  2. I read this issue this week on a whim.  I thought it was okay, but most of that was because i was lost being part way through a story.  I was glad to hear who Nightwing turned out to be.

    Great Review as always Neb.
