My favorite Superman stories (and there aren’t many that I enjoy) are the ones that don’t focus on him. The two exceptions being Millar’s Elseworld: Red Son, and the first half of Morrison’s All-Star Superman. Two stories that I went into not expecting to like. Because, in addition to not being a big Superman fan, I also don’t count Morrison or Millar as my favorite writers (though each have their moments). Going blindly into this issue, I thought I’d find it, at best, mediocre; at worst, something I might want to teat apart with my teeth.

Instead, I found myself curious about the first six issues. I like Morrison’s take on this younger Superman. More importantly, I liked the time he spent exploring the New Troy characters. I thought the cell phone SUperman chant was waaaaay hokey and didn’t really fit into the rest of the story, but one bad panel didn’t ruin my enjoyment of this otherwise intriguing story.
