Superman World Of New Krypton #5 (OF 12)

This is indeed a subtle book.  So much so that, I'm ashamed to say, I didn't see quite how layered this story was after first reading it.  My initial reaction was ambivalence, seeing as the issue was well-written, but seemed to "do" and then quickly "undo" what was established, plot-wise.  That's only on the surface, though.  After sitting and thinking for a while, I realized just how brilliant and complex this story was.  Of course, this all hinges on Zod.  Some of the greatest comic book villains are those with shades of grey, and I've commented before that the reason I'm enjoying this Superman series above all other is that Zod is definitely not portrayed as a mustache-twirling villain.  Here, having successfully prosecuted against Kal and seeing him charged with treason, Zod quickly sets about a chain of events that lead to the verdict being thrown out.  The question we're left with at the end of the issue, after seeing Zod seemingly assassinated, were his actions at the trial to be taken at face-value, or is this a far more nuanced plot?  Is it possible that Zod, having seen Kal balk at an easy escape attempt, thereby seemingly setting himself up as a martyr, set the wheels turning in Zod's brain... causing him to think: "Oh yeah?  I'll out-martyr you, Superman!"  If so, will Kal somehow end up the fall guy for the next big bad thing that will surely happen?  There's a whole whirlwind of possibilities, but what is the truth?  Tune in next time... same Super time, same Super channel!
