Before today I felt that John Byrne's Man of Steel was the definitive origin story of the modern (or Post-Crisis) version of Superman. Today, though, I read Superman: Secret Origin #1 by Geoff Johns and Gary Frank. Johns and Frank prove to be an incredible team once again, but this time they've really outdone themselves. Every note is pitch-perfect, from Johns' characterizations--particularly the Kents just doing their best to be parents to such an incredible child--to moments of Clark discovering new abilities and the necessity to hide them, and Gary Frank's Brando-esque depiction of Jor-El, and his actually having drawn all of these extremely recognizable characters as believable teenagers. This is easily the best Superman book I've read since All-Star. I cannot wait for the next issue.
