*insert rant about Keith leaving art duties here*
30 days of night. This is a book that I love, this is a story I love, and this is a horror comic which is my favorite kind of comic books. This is why is pains me to say that i don't know if I will be continuing on with this particular series.
Last issue ended with a cliffhanger from hell which as someone who has only read the first graphic novel of 30 days of night and the current series I was flabbergasted at. This issue picks up closely after and Eben is pissed and heres where I have to warn anyone who actually is reading *SPOILERS*. I normally try to avoid spoilers in my reviews but I can't explain why this one didn't work unless I do go into spoiler territory. Eben's wife and partner in eternal life is dead (by a accidental machete slash for that matter) and Eben is going on a rampage. He goes into Barrow and kills, and kills, and kills until none are left. And heres where the book lost me but also hits its height for the issue.
Eben just killed everyone he ever knew, he just destroyed and burned his hometown, and he has completely become a vampire. Wow does that completely null out the original stories sad and moody ending. I never liked that Eben was alive but I was ok with it but this book just shows him slaughtering people which you would think would be scary but really its not. Only one shot really struck me but it really did strike me and thats Eben crouching batman-style on a rooftop overlooking the burning city of barrow its a honestly somber and horrifying scene.
But then were back to mustache and police girl. Alice our protagonist is sad about accidentally killing a random vampire and is working actively again and there has been a very open attack and the FBI can't let the info that vampires exist get out so they end up killing the witnesses at the end of the issue. Another good scene is Alice realizing that the witnesses will die but again its bogged down by not only her being changed into a regular skinny comic book heroine style by the new art even though the new art is great.
In short: the story follows a natural progression but as a fan of the earlier works its not particularly the best direction and certain things leave one that has continuity on the brain scratching his head. At the same time though the book is fast paced and has alot of great moments. While I don't know if I will be keeping it on my pull list, it does't mean its not a good book.
and I've said it a thousand times but GET TEMPLESMITH BACK PLEASE!
