“Mmm, yeah…that’s good. Do it more.”

*rub, rub*

You hear that? It’s the sound of iFanboy giving Bendis another hot stone massage. Part of me imagines that he pops by here every once in a while when he gets a coveted Pick of the Week, and is impressed that there are people writing about how they like his work, and is flattered, even in the face of mainstream press coverage by big conglomerate owned entities. Then the other part of me thinks that’s just silly, and we’re really only writing this for the enjoyment of ourselves (ooh, fun…) and Patrick and the mysterious Dude. I guess it will have to do.

If you’ve ever tried to write about a comic book over twenty times to describe how good it is (and who hasn’t?), you’d know what a challenge it might be to think of something worth saying. One of the things that’s great about Powers is that, they sort of make it easy. There is always something new being brought to the table. You get a sense reading Bendis’ work that he just won’t chill out and phone in his work. He’s consistently trying to make it good, and break ground, and do things that interest him. If only all media were done this way. Instead, work like this, which is challenging, and interesting, and flexing its creativity, is rarely rewarded, and instead disappears into the ether. But for some reason, some wonderful reason, in Bendis, it has been allowed to flourish and grow, and Powers has been around for years. How did this happen?

This issue is a story about another Power who has been killed, just like most of the issues before it, but the thing is, we meet a superhero who gets really small. Ant Man small. But the trick is here, her parts are rendered from her tiny point of view, where the faces are huge, and even the dialog balloons are oversized to indicate what things are like from her perspective. That’s fantastic use of the medium, and I noticed it immediately.

In addition to that, we meet a Federal special agent who acts like all FBI agents do in cop shows, and that is to be a cock. And like a man who has doubtlessly watched hundreds or thousands of cop shows, Bendis keeps him pretty true to the accepted form, except that he’s gigantic and can teleport people.

The final bit to chew on invloves Detective Pilgrim, who did a bad, bad thing, and may or may not be caught for it. There’s a nice exchange between her and the IA woman investigating her. She’s clearly suspected, but watching them step around the issue is interesting, and of course, the nuances are wonderfully captured by Oeming and his work.

Also, just to rub it in further, the cover design is spectacular.

“That’s better, can I rub your feet as well, Bendis?”
