Bendis is like the Lakers in the 80′s. He can’t be stopped. He can’t be slowed down, and for some reason, I can’t seem to get tired of his work. I’ve been reading a heavy output from Bendis for over 4 years now, and no one (maybe Rucka) comes close to being this consistent and this prolific.
What we have in The Pulse is the story of the goings on at the Daily Bugle, Marvel’s big New York newspaper. Think of it like the New York Post, not the Times. J. Jonah, rapid hater of costumed crimefighters has gotten with the times, and smells what the people want, and concedes to do an all superhero special publication for the paper. Making up the staff are perrenial favorites like Ben Urich and ex-Alias star, Jessica Jones. I’ll admit, it doesn’t sound like the most exciting of stuff does it?
Then there’s a murder. One of the reporters was killed last issue, and now Jameson is marshalling the troops, er, reporters to use all their know-how to find the killer, working in full cooperation with the Police. The problem is, and this is a brilliant angle, the cops hate the staff of this particular paper, because of past editorial decisions and bashing of the police force. Then you have the sweet conflict. Of course, Ben Urich stumbles onto the trail and we’re off and running by the last page.
Mark Bagley does not sleep. He has no eyelids, and is not like other men who require time off, food, water, rest. No, he is the uber-man spoke of in Nietzsche. The man can’t not draw at least 2 full comics per month. Less than that is slacking and he shall be thought worthless. The man must have come out of the womb before his deadline, with five pages completed, inked and lettered. I’ve made my point.

The Pulse is looking to be really good. Although I miss Alias alot. I miss Gaydos’s art alot too. Bagley is good, but I prefer him only on Ultimate rather than a book like this…
My pick was Blue Monday – such fun stuff
Can’t believe they killed Beast in Ultimate X-Men
The other good book this week was Gotham Central. I fear for it’s future so much. I’m guessing it’s continuance depends on how well the first trade sells. It just came out. Way late in my opinion. Pick it up!
Can’t say that I knew about the ultimate beast thing as I haven’t been to the shop yet, but yeah, I like the pulse.
The beast thing really isn’t a surprise, since he got crushed at the end of the last one.
don’t stand up for him, he RUINED MY COMIC BOOK LIFE
The Beast ruined your comic book life?
Actually, yes. When they made him into that cat fellow on new Xmen, he ruined my comic book life. I swear I’ll never understand that.
I’ll go with it.
Yeah. that’s all I got, too.
