Back in October, I posted this in which I basically said that Ellis was probably doing this for the paycheck, and it wouldn’t be very good. I specifically remember talking to Conor very shortly after posting, and the conversation went vaguely like this:

J: Did you see that Thunderbolts story?

C: Yes. It’s awesome.

J: Really? Ellis doing Marvel?

C: Yes. Warren Ellis does great superheroes.

J: Alright, what about super muscle-y drawing Deodato?!

C: I’ve always liked Deodato.

J: Really?!

C: Yes.

I walked away feeling oddly petty, as if I’d walked out and expected to say, Won’t this suck? and he’d reply, It will totally suck! and we’d then just feel really cool with our attitudes and snobbishness. Instead, I realized I was being a bit of a prick, and for no reason.

Ellis does write superheroes pretty well. And even though he has made fun of superheroes a whole lot in the past, it doesn’t mean he can’t write them. There’s this spark of positivity in Ellis’ work he tries to hide with a crusty attitude and violence. But at the center of things, there’s hope for the best in people. Spider Jerusalem from Transmetropolitan was a hideous bastard, but he really just wanted the world to be good. The Authority were really trying to help people, sometimes destructively, but at the center of the depravity was an altruism. And Richard Fell, of the aptly titled Fell is a good guy surrounded by a really shitty world. That seems to be Ellis’ ongoing theme. And oddly enough, that fits pretty snugly in the world of Civil War.

Had it not been for the character, Jack Flag, I wouldn’t have liked this issue nearly as much, because it wouldn’t have had any heart. Do not mistake me. A well written scene with Bullseye is always fun, but without a human element, it does not a story make. I’ll admit that it’s a little haggard to have Jack’s girlfriend trying to get Jack to leave his adventuring past behind him, but the character was written with enough conviction that I can find some humanity in him. I understand that even though he knows better practically, he can’t quite give up his superhero past completely, because this whole superhero registration thing just isn’t right. That’s one thing that seems to work very well in this whole never-ending event of Civil War. When done well, the little guys, the characters you don’t know as well, can be very interesting when superimposed against this whole backdrop of registration enforcement. Jack can’t quite go with the flow, even though he knows there might be consequences.

Those consequences are the Thunderbolts themselves, who are a group of real bad dudes hired by the government to hunt down unregistered superheroes. This, in itself, is a pretty fun premise, if not all that deep, but I think Ellis easily has it in him to make these scenes very entertaining, but to place the heart of this particular story in Jack Flag’s story, which is a great move.

I also want to take a moment to applaud Mike Deodato for the best looking work I’ve ever seen him do. Where much of his work in New Avengers was heavily overwraught, this is just very tastefully subdued work, which still retains the flavor of his style. The whole book projects a visual idea of the calm before the storm. Things are quiet at the surface, but there’s a lot of tension behind the shadows and faces in this issue, and that’s very much thanks to Deodato’s exemplary artwork. I was, once again, very pleasantly surprised.

Certainly, surprise is the best word I can come up with to describe my feelings about this issue. It was a writer I didn’t trust to put much into it. It was an artist I haven’t historically liked. And it was a premise that just seemed tired. But damn if I don’t really want to know what happens next. Thanks for subtly putting me in my place Conor. I guess I owe you.

We’re gonna chalk this one up to a quite pleasant surprise. While this is many a fanboy’s dream book, it really didn’t hold a lot of appeal for me outside of curiosity. At least, I didn’t think so.

I couldn’t agree more. Thunderbolts #110 was awesome. It was my best of the week as well in a week that for me was pretty good overall.

    Results as follows:

Thunderbolts #110 – I can’t recall a book in recent memory that makes me want to gush so much about it. It was really good. Much better than I expected. I don’t think I even had any nitpicks about it. Virtually perfect cover to cover. OK one nitpick, Osborn’s hair appears to be in cornrolls in some of the panels. That needs to go. Other than that though: AWESOME.
Ellis may be an asshole, but he sure can write. He made the Herculean task of making Jack Flag interesting look easy. The way that he writes this makes the team seem terrifying and insane. That’s an awesome combo. It was woven throughout the book from Norman Osborn’s interview with Bullseye where he licked the sweat off of his face to the fact that the team is kept and transported in shackles with countermeasures.
There were some other really cool things in there. I liked the Thunderbolts action figures with the ridiculous Captain America the terrorist thing. It fit perfectly with the whole CW evil govt propaganda thing. I liked the Moonstone interview with Osborn. It kind underscored the hypocrisy of the whole situation(CW and the formation of the all new all evil govt sponsored Thunderbolts). Osborn says: ‘You on the other hand have neither morals nor ethics’. Add to this that he basically blackmails her into taking the job and there you go. Also liked the pokes at the inanity of the media. Ellis shows them waiting to hopefully film the Thunderbolts launch.

Wolverine Origins #10 – I don’t think I could’ve followed with a larger contrast. As a matter of fact, I can’t remember there ever being a larger contrast. My Lord this book sucks. I’m going to skip the first 17 pages or so because the last 5 are so fucked that the need to talk about all the others melts away.
First thing: when did Wolverine start crying(in comics)? Wolverine is like the prototypical badass. He does not cry. He eats jerky and breaks shit. Maybe there was beer leaking out of his eye. That’s my story anyway. Seriously though I get it. He has this bizarre cats in the cradle the boy was just like me moment and that’s a bad thing because of all the bad things that come with being just like Wolverine. duh. Angry or sad, yes. Crying no.
Second thing: Wolverine’s son has a fucking mullet. I could deal with the fact that this book sucks as much as it does. I could deal with the fact that they’re ruining the mystery of the character and they’re selling it cheap. I cannot deal with a mullet. Absolutely not. It’s not even a regular mullet; it’s a mohawk mullet. What the fuck? Maybe they should get someone to write this who has the decency to put a shirt on when it’s time to take a picture. If I had to give this a letter grade I would be unable because books that deserved an F would have a good reason to sue me for comparing them to this.

Blade #5 – This was better than Blade #1. That’s not saying much. I feel like they shoe-horned this in so they could put the Casualties of War banner on it and a guest appearance by Wolverine. This is my second shot at this series so far. They are 0 for 2. Who the hell really believes that Blade and Wolverine are evenly matched? I’ve only got limited Blade experience but clearly Wolverine would beat his ass up and down the street. Not to be an anal jerkoff but…. in Origins Wolverine is wearing his brown and gold costume and in this book he’s wearing the blue and yellow one with the x-belt. So what right? In Blade, he says that he won’t fight Blade until he has a beer because he just went 15 rounds with Omega Red. That happened in Origins in the OTHER costume.

Strange Girl #13 – This was good. I may be one of the 10 people in America reading it but I like it a lot. This issue had a fill-in artist though and the pencils weren’t very good. Story good, pencils bad. Traditionally though the art has been great.

White Tiger #3 – This was good. I’ve enjoyed the entire mini to this point. I have one complaint though. [setup not complaint] This story has Daredevil in it. It’s Iron Fist as DD whom they refer to as Daredevil 2.0 which is stupid but not the problem. [complaint]The problem is with the lettering for DD and DD alone. The font is all wavy and terrible. I think it’s called ’50s Horror Movie Poster Bold or something. Otherwise though it’s good.

JSA #2 – Really good. It’s just really fun. That’s kind of a weird thing to say about flying nazis isn’t it? I don’t really know these characters at all. Has it been this good in the past? I’d like to get some trades. I love Ted Grant. I know it’s weird who would’ve predicted that his would be the character I immediately warmed up to? They need to keep his son around. That was great.

Nightly News #3 was not delivered to my lcs this week. Thanks Diamond

Punisher Max #43 – Beginning of a new arc. I liked it. Can’t wait to see where it goes. This book is consistently great.

Runaways #23 – This book just keeps getting better. Or maybe I’m getting old and I can’t remember. Anyhow, I really hope he succeeds in bringing Gert back to life even if it does cost Chase his own. I feel weird saying that. I’m usually very dead is dead. In this case though, not so much. Quick question: Old Lace obeys Chase because Gert willed him to her. If he dies will he have to will him back to her or will ownership/control revert automatically? Dinosaur inheritance rules fascinate me.

Batman #662 – The fact that Morrison and Kubert come back next month makes me happy in my soul. The strangest part is that it made me realize that I have one. Who would’ve thought? I’m going to ignore this issue almost entirely. My only question is: What does “I’m not doing Black Man’s time at a White Man’s jail” mean? Thought that was…. um…… odd.

X-23 #2 – I didn’t get a copy last week so I picked it up today. It’s good. I’d like to see more after this mini. I have one problem with this particular issue though. It’s a bullshit picky idiot problem. The [public] high school principal drives a convertible Jag. That doesn’t really seem all that realistic to me. What do I know?

    feeling long-winded tonight

Someone either types faster than Superman or had that all ready to go in a word doc….

He wrote more than I did. And that took me 40 minutes.

  5. import says:

    I said I was feeling long-winded

  6. import says:

I Agree thunderbolts was realy good exspecialy the opening seen. The only Ellis book I ever read was Transmetripolitan which was Excellent but i have heard Ellis is a very hit or miss writer.

  7. import says:

Ellis is kind of like Morrison for me in that it’s either tremendously good or tremendously bad

  8. import says:

    Good analogy thanks.

  9. import says:

    they killed animal man.

    WHY

  10. import says:

Eh, I didn’t particularly love Thunderbolts. I really only bought it to see what happens to Speedball/Penance, and he was hadly in it. Hopefully there will be more of him in issue 111.

Did anyone else notice the one panel where Normas Osborn looks exactly like Tommy Lee Jones?

  11. import says:

Couldn’t agree more. One of the books I was madly looking forward to this next year, and it paid off, can’t wait to see what comes next.

  12. import says:

Josh, your attitude towards the Thunderbolts creative team sounds a lot like my attitude towards the Thunderbolts team themselves. I’m sure there’s a metaphor in there somewhere.

I think Deodato is Exhibit A for the necessity of making sure the right artist finds the right book. On this, he was perfect, even though he has driven me off at least two titles. He drew some runs on JMS’ Spider-Man and it was him, not JMS, that made the difference when I dropped the book. Who knows; I might have been able to handle “Sins Past” if it hadn’t looked like… that. But again, Thunderbolts? C’est magnifique! *mwah!*

Did anyone else notice the one panel where Normas Osborn looks exactly like Tommy Lee Jones?

Only in the sense that I had to stop reading the book and stare at that page for two minutes trying to figure out why the media were interviewing Tommy Lee Jones about the Thunderbolts. “Why are…? What does…? Is it a ‘Fugitive’ thing?… OH! Osborn, is that person! Hair ridges. I see. Little Greg Land homage, there. Where were we?”

It is a good book. It is the best book I read this week. But. Maybe it’s just me, but I have a hard time dealing with the idea that the Marvel Universe could live through the events of the first arc of “The Pulse,” where Osborn is wantonly killing strangers and bursting into the Bugle throwing bombs and trying to kill Luke Cage’s pregnant girlfriend, only to have the same public happily accept his current role in the Thunderbolts and put him on TV talking about America. I mean… trying to blow up pregnant ladies is a little above and beyond Michael Richards’ antics. That I know about.

Fred, I have a lawyer friend who specializes in dinosaur estate law. I’ll see what I can find out for you.

  13. import says:

    Jesus Fred!!!!

  14. import says:

Fred, I have a lawyer friend who specializes in dinosaur estate law. I’ll see what I can find out for you.

    I’d appreciate it

  15. import says:

I am really confused, wasn’t Norman arrested and crazy on the last issue? Didn’t he shoot an Atlantean on national TV and didn’t he blow up a bunch of them as the goblin? Why is he in charge of the T-bolts?
I did like this issue though, for the same reason I liked the begining of Civil War, it shows us why this whole registration thing is wrong and how the little guys react to it. This issue might as well be called Jack Flag cuse to me thats what made it good. This makes sense, not Secret Avengers fighting crime then running away or fighting pro-registration guys, they wouldn’t be fighting for their right to fight crime thats just silly.

  16. import says:

I liked the new Punisher Max arc, it seems like its pretty cool even though Frank was barely in the issue.

  17. import says:

personally i’d prefer fight(ing) for my right to party

  18. import says:

How could you pick that crap over JSA #2? Ellis writes every character the same way and that way is for all of them to be the same type of jerk he is.

  19. import says:

JSA#2 knocked my freaking socks off… I’m glad I chose it as my first monthly pick up since I was 10. The whole book was pretty good, but the big reveal at the end blew me away. I haven’t gotten this excited over a monthly book since Adjectiveless X-Men when it first started.

I might pick up T-Bolts too, but I’m on the fence at the moment.

  20. import says:

I picked up Thunderbolts and thumbed through it, but didn’t buy it because I just couldn’t get past the fact that this team should not exist!

  21. import says:

    1. I thought Bullseye had already been recruited. Isn’t that what we saw in Civil War 4?
    2. Since when is Osborn “Director of the Thunderbolts”?
    3. An update on what the fuck’s been going on between issues 109 and 110 would be nice.
    4. A team full of villains and…Penance? Are they fucking kidding?

As a standalone comic, it was good. The commercial with action figures was seriously disturbing, as I’m sure it was meant to be and the writing and art on this issue is great all ove the place.
As an issue of Thunderbolts, I dunno. Does Warren Ellis *always* get to ignore whatever came before when he picks up a book? Seems like he did it to Iron Man, now he’s doing it here.

Sadly, Blade 5 kinda sucked. A few good thought balloons from the protagonist does not a good book make.

And I couldn’t seem to get my hands on Wonder Man #2; neither of my stores had it.

  22. import says:

    JSA #2 QUESTION/SPOILER BELOW

Only read a few books yesterday, but Thunderbolts and JSA made the cut. Thunderbolts was entertaining, but I’ll reserve judgment until I see the whole team in action (and interaction).

Onto JSA and the big reveal at the end. Is that who I think it is? The “original” Star Boy from LSH? Did he have anything to do with Kingdom Come?

If 52 ends with the Question living and Animal Man dead, I will be unhappy. Poor Buddy. Should have never gone into space in the first place.

  23. import says:

    *JSA Spoilers*

well, there are already a few minor characters from KC that have already appeared in JSA… The dude with the huge swastika on his body, I think Rebel from issue 1 was in KC and Starman has his KC costume. So we’re definitely being led to believe that events in JSA are going to collide with the KC universe.

Which makes the fanboy in me drool. DC’s been on a roll for me this year… Marvel, not as much

  24. import says:

Setting Norman Osborn as the spokesman of a government sponsored team of superheroes is hypocrisy. He is one of Marvel’s most deranged characters. Second only to Bullseye, who is also on the team. It highlights how bad the registration system is and how corrupt the government is in the Marvel universe. Also it changes the paradigm for what is viewed as a hero in the Marvel universe. In Post Civil War Marvel, being a superhero isn’t about representing noble ideals, it is about following the rules and doing what you are told. Even the most amoral of individuals can be considered “good” as long as they obey the system.

I am not complaining, I am just explaining why I think they put Norman Osborn at the head of this team. The old Thunderbolts had proven themselves to be heroes. Even Baron Zemo proved he wasn’t completely evil anymore. The characters no longer fit the concept of the book. Why not put the worst characters in the Marvel universe in the Thunderbolts role? I’ve been a T-bolts fan since the beginning (except for that Fight Club crap). I was very much enjoying the series before this, but I welcome this new spin on the concept. It is an odd grouping of characters and I want to see how Ellis is going to make it work. It should be interesting to see what he comes up with.

Also, I think they did it so we could get a scene where Bullseye gets licked, which was very creepy and creepy is fun.

  25. import says:

Thunderbolts 110 takes place BEFORE CW #4.

I’m getting my books on Friday.

  26. import says:

I’m a little unclear on Penance’s legal status. Why is he restrained? Or did he ask to be?

  27. import says:

A couple brief thoughts on this book: I completely took this on its own merits, and even though I think the stuff leading up to the formation of this group is lame, and some of the inconsistencies being pointed out above are valid, I just ignored all that, and reviewed only the issue above. In that context, it was a fine time. I just accepted the facts as they were laid in front of me to start this book. I mean, if Lex Luthor can be President, this Osborne’s role isn’t so far fetched, is it? But I certainly understand the mixed feelings.

And Darrell, lest you actually surprise us and agree with me some day, I’ll throw you the bone that JSA was the front runner for most of the issue while I was reading it. It was great. And then the last page happened, and I didn’t know what the hell happened, and the bottom dropped out for me. I don’t know enough about DC to be able to follow that twist. But we’ll get to that on the podcast I’m sure.

  28. import says:

I hated the T-Bolts #110. It felt so forced and the whole news reporters doing the play-by-play was so lame. Didnt these same news reporters report all the bad stuff Venom and Bullseye and all the other T-Bolts members have done?? And the action figures with the T-Bolts kicking Caps ass was so out there. Are there no Grampas in the Marvel U telling thier Grandsons about what a real hero Cap is? Maybe I just didnt get it.

Blade #5 was good but i had a problem: Is Blade selling so poorly that they made Guggenheim do yet another epilogue to his CW Wolvie arc?? Thats what it seemed to me.

Batman and Superman vs. Aliens and Predator. WTF can you say about this one? I thought it was fun though.

I got Hellstorm #4 and Nightly News #3 but havent got to them yet.

  29. import says:

I was more confused about why Songbird and Radioactive Man were being restrained. I thought Songbird had her criminal deeds absolved at some point and Radioactive Man is a Chinese dignitary who should have diplomatic immunity for the crimes he commits.

I bought Norman Osborn because he is supposed to be a powerful business man. He probably has friends in powerful positions in the government. Friends who would take care of him. Also his psychosis was apart of a reaction to chemicals he was exposed to. They could spin it that so as long as he stays on medication he isn’t a dangerous nut job. If I lived in the Marvel Universe I probably wouldn’t buy that spin, but it is a pretty crazy world that Marvel Universe.

  30. import says:

Not to get political, but giving these hardcore criminals a “second chance” seems more like a liberal idea and not something Stark would subscribe to.

Isn’t it funny how no voice was raised in protest to this idea? I haven’t read any of the tie-ins, (Je refuse!) so maybe it happened there.

  31. import says:

Not to get political, but giving these hardcore criminals a “second chance” seems more like a liberal idea and not something Stark would subscribe to.

According to Thunderbolts, Tony Stark is liberal.

  32. import says:

Ah, but what makes you think Stark is a right winger (over looking his behavior during Civil War and a lot of instances before it)? He gave all that money to the Democratic Party. He is practically a hippie.

Also Tony Stark is an alcoholic who has made terrible mistakes that people have forgiven. And one of his closest allies has been a guy who has repeatedly abused his wife. Tony is all about forgive and forget.

  33. import says:

wife abuse and mass murder aren’t really on the same spectrum of forgive and forget. i think its best not to think too hard about tony’s motivation for enlisting criminals because it will never make sense.

  34. import says:

Yeah, but the very concept of registration of powers is a hard right ideal and giving villains a badge seems to run contrary to that, in my view. Doesn’t jibe. Could you imagine Kerry or Clinton doing that?

  35. import says:

I hated how they had that news cast on the unveiling of the T-bolts, it was cliche and stupid, and what the fuck were those two missiles that they launched first? The only good thing to come out of this was that it made the anti registration side make sense again, Jack Flag (I have never seen before) made this a good issue.

  36. import says:

Was it Harry that shot the Antlantean dude and bombed the Atlantean hideout and then got rabbies and got taken away by mistery dude? Which I guess would be his father Norman.

  37. import says:

i know i would let hannibal lecter register, he would be a great internal affairs interrogator….

“hello angent madrox…i see that you and your duplicates have been misbehaving….now we cant have that….lets see how a kidney would go with some risotto….ooohh i see that the cut has given me more of you to have for dinner….”

yeah….second chances are a great idea

  38. import says:

I think that the level of debate that this has inspired is really cool.

  39. import says:

Right, they are very different crimes, which is why Tony and Hank aren’t running around with explosive nanites in their bodies.

I think they want us to see Tony as more of a in the middle guy, rather than a left or right winger. I don’t think he buys into registration because of his conservative ideals. I think he sees it as something he can use to bring about a utopia that will benefit all of mankind. I am just expanding on the pitch he gave the guys in the first Illuminati special. I don’t think registration is a political issue with Tony, I think he believes he can use to turn humanity into something nobler than it is.

  40. import says:

I think it would be cool if after 12 issues Stark double-crosses them and blows their heads off a la Battle Royale.

  41. import says:

In a real world situation, I think most people would side with Stark, but the writers of CW have done a poor job of making the pro-registration side look sympathetic.

  42. import says:

I just read about Civil War:Confessions by Bendis and Mallev so I’m really looking foward to it.

    speaking of Deodato’s photo-referencing..
here’s a detailed example of how he works.
that IS Tommy Lee Jones as Green Goblin,
he uses that doofus from 90210 for Peter Parker, himself for layouts, etc.

halfway down the page, they show the example of what photos he uses..
    http://glasshousegraphics.com/breakingin/layouts/index.html

  44. import says:

I will agree with you in that the Pro-registration side has no endearing qualities, but they do have reality on their side. At this point I don

  45. import says:

In a real world situation, I think most people would side with Stark, but the writers of CW have done a poor job of making the pro-registration side look sympathetic.

I’ve enjoyed Civil War but I think that it has one failing. I think that on some level its an allegory for basically the way that America has handled itself post-9/11(Stamford). I think that the writers have done a poor job presenting the pro-reg side because maybe they have certain opinons about how our own de facto pro-reg side has handled itself and have a hard time seeing it themselves. In my opinion, that they can’t see it is the major failing in that our real life government has yet to cross any of the lines that the Marvel U government has so the central analogy doesn’t hold together as well as it should. These are tough times in America where we have to decide how to proceed. In the Marvel U there is no question.

I’m not trying to make this a political debate. I’m just trying to point out what I see going on here

  46. import says:

    That was very interesting.

  47. import says:

me? really? I’m touched. I expected to get jumped

  48. import says:

oh NO, i think you’re SPOT ON.

  49. import says:

“Blade #5 was good but i had a problem: Is Blade selling so poorly that they made Guggenheim do yet another epilogue to his CW Wolvie arc??”

My thoughts exactly. While not a bad issue, this proved that not even off-to-the-side titles are safe from the Civil War Plot Hammer. I’m all for boosting sales so that the series keeps going – but there’s a contradiction here: if Marvel wants the tie-in to bring people onboard and then stay for future issues, and the issue they bring the people in for is shoehorned and forced to be a tie-in, it isn’t totally representative of the best the series can offer. Which seems self-defeating.

Anyway, Thunderbolts was just a C+ for me, but I loved the page with the action figures. I do agree that this was the best Deodato’s art has looked to me in some time. But I’m on the fence about picking up the next one.

  50. import says:

Blade also had the Wolverine costume issues I detailed above. I am a petty petty man

  51. import says:

I read Blade too and I have to say I enjoyed it. I haven’t read any of the previous issues and actually was resenting buying this one purely because it was a Civil War tie-in. This one made me think I could buy some more. It was a done in one issue, it had Mobius drop in, and a fight with Wolverine. Personally, I don’t buy that Blade and Wolverine match up equally, but I buy that SHIELD would throw Blade at Wolverine to see what would happen. If Blade won then SHIELD wouldn’t have to deal with Wolverine as a loose end. If Wolverine diced Blade then SHIELD doesn’t have to deal with Blade. I hate to say that is good enough, but has Blade been more complicated than that?

  52. import says:

Didn’t know where else to post this, but here’s an awesome interview (IMO), with Frank Miller about the “300″ movie.

  53. import says:

“I read Blade too and I have to say I enjoyed it… This one made me think I could buy some more.”

Dave, even though this contradicts my point aboce, I hope that I am indeed wrong and that you and other people stick with the series – because I’ve been greatly enjoying it and would like to see it stick around. I would say if you liked this issue, you’d really like the others: all done-in-one fun.

  54. import says:

Fred, you are totally right on.

My aggravation with Civil War (I’ve only been back in comics since issue 4) is that the whole whose side are you on thing is a ruse… There is not much of an attempt at all to present the pro-reg side, which, as some have pointed out, actually does have some merit. Instead, Stark and Richards are painted as complete jerks, in no way sympathetic at all.

A little more character development and fleshing out the other side would have made it all a bit more interesting. As it is right now it’s like I’m reading a book the American Civil War in the south where it is called the War of Northern Aggression.

  55. import says:

Wolverine Origins was horrible. It was just… I got finished reading it and I realized it took me all of 4 minutes. I know I should have known better… but even though I hate how clich

  56. import says:

    Thanks Ekval.
The further point that I have about it is that this story is also hampered by the fact that it’s a battle between a pragmatist(IM) and an idealist(CA). Where’s the romance in believing that something is the future rather than thinking it’s right? I don’t see it and it kind of makes Tony look like a jerkoff while Cap looks like a man of honor. Base concept clearly is flawed.

They’ve even made some attempts to make Tony look like he believes in it rather than he just can’t avoid it of late. They’re too late and not enough. IM needs his honor back; clearly demonstrate it or let Cap win and get it behind us.

None of this is to say that I haven’t loved CW. I just see story problems that possibly wouldn’t exist if it were written by someone other than Millar. His past statements about other things make me almost wonder if this whole thing is intentional on his part. It’s possible everyone else just got taken for a ride.

  57. import says:

Spiffy are you reading X-23 Target? It’s actually good. I couldn’t agree more on Origins. I’m constantly bitching but I still buy it for the same reason.

  58. import says:

I don’t want to see Tony regain his honor. I want him to either be

    a) The resident Marvel jerk that everyone hates but has to tolerate because he’s, well… Tony Stark/Iron Man.

    b) Or the newest big bad villain in the Marvel U.

Clearly B is not going to happen but a guy can dream.

  59. import says:

It certainly looks like they are going with jerk-Tony and playing him as something between Maria Hill and Nick Fury as the head of SHIELD. And I like that idea.

  60. import says:

    nick fury is the shit
    tony’s just an impotent dick

impotent in the sense of will strength and honor not the other thing

    Contrarian Force GO!:

“There is not much of an attempt at all to present the pro-reg side, which, as some have pointed out, actually does have some merit.”

I’ve written these words here before, if only to enjoy the sound of my own voice, but oh my God the pro-reg side is the only one you saw in any book until Spidey went rogue. (Wolverine gets partial credit.) It’s been driving me up a frickin’ wall since May. Every character with a book named after ‘em seemed to be shaking Tony Stark’s hand and hunting their old friends down, from Ms. Marvel to She-Hulk to Squirrel Girl. And in every one of those books, they bent over backwards to put heartfelt pro-reg words in the characters’ mouths. I mean, Jesus, even Spider-Man took off his mask and waxed patriotic with a goddamn tear in his eye, while the best the Thing could do was leave town. And if earnest, heartfelt, impassioned monologues by previously sympathetic characters about why it’s right to be a good little stormtrooper can’t be made to sound convincing, well, I have an alternate suggestion for why that might be.

  64. import says:

    Squirrel Girl is hot

  65. import says:

I get so confused with all this X-Universe stuff and I’ve been reading Uncanny since 1978. As soon as the titles started proliferating, I began to lose interest. It’s really hard to follow what’s going on, because characters and plotlines jump from book-to-book. I miss the days of one or two x-titles. Right now I only read the 3 core x-titles, and even that is tenuous, given the shaky quality of the two books not written by Whedon. I’m willing to give X-Factor a shot in trade.

Imagine being a seven year-old comic reader and picking up X-Men 136 as your first issue of X-Men. Talk about fireworks going off in your head! If you compare it to what was coming out at the time, you’d see how revolutionary it was. I miss those days where X-Men was THE book, and you could read that one book and follow what was going on in the mutantverse.

I sound like Grumpy Old Man ™!

  66. import says:

I’m willing to give X-Factor a shot in trade

It’s really great. It’s in my top 5 or 10 right now

  67. import says:

52 is my pick of this week if only for the page where Buddy Baker’s wife senses his death. It seemed like Morrison was finally saying goodbye to his Animal Man.
Thunderbolts is right behind it though. Had it not been for the Animal Man bits in 52, this would have been my top pic.
    Punisher was great, as usual.
Superman/Batman/Aliens/Predator was ok. I don’t think it was worth six bucks but it’s always cool seeing cross overs like this as I am a total sucker for them. I do like that the predators are a “less evolved” version of the ones we are familiar with.

  68. import says:

And about Thunderbolts-did it seem like this should have come out after Civil War was wrapped up? Ellis did a decent job of not giving too much away even though this book seems like it takes place in the aftermath. Sorry if this has been addressed elsewhere.

  69. import says:

I assumed Thunderbolts took place after Civil War had ended, but then the commercial for the toys selling terrorist-Cap made me think it was taking place during Civil War. Could it be that Cap and the New Avengers are still outlaws even after Civil War ends?

  70. import says:

    i think that they are

  71. import says:

Ummmmm, yeah, I like the sound that.

  72. import says:

I can’t honestly see how else it could be. There is no way that they can wrap this up[even with 28 pages] in a way that everyone is just automatically cool without pulling some complete bullshit dr strange type of thing. There’s a law on the books. Money’s been spent. The full force of the federal government has been leaning on the ‘secret avengers’ for months. That doesn’t go away in 28 without some major bullshit

  73. import says:

Somebody’s going to have a tough job writing these characters out of a corner when Marvel decides they don’t like what they’ve done to their characters.

I actually welcome change. I’m the guy who gets pissed when a character gets a new costume only to have it switched back a few months later. I hate it when characters are brought back fromt he dead (except Iron Fist, Moon Knight, and Wonder Man). However, if you’re going to make changes, do it in the context of a believable story. Civil War just has too many holes.

  74. import says:

Actually, getting out of Thunderbolts will be easy.

I’m gonna change the subject. Has anyone seen Del Toro’s new film Pan’s Labyrinth? Pan’s going into wider release next week and where I live in BFE, I’ll still have a 3 hour drive to see it. This movie is supposedly the Bee’s Knees and was wondering if the buzz was true. To be honest I didn’t love Mimic or Hellboy in particular, but I LOVED The Devils Backbone.

There is no way that the anti-reg side can win this!!!!! Even if they win this fight and break everybody out of the negative zone they still loose, go back and read Winter Soldier there’s a panel that says that like 70% of the population favors Stark so there is no way that the anti-reg forces win. I think that there is some sort of big aftermath event, this whole CW thing can still end well, its a cool concept to think that pro-reg wins and that some books pretty much go back to normal, like the avengers(the new lineup is all pro-reg I think)and Ironman, but some heroes who make it out of this battle and are still anti-reg have to run and hide, like Spidey its a cool concept.

  83. import says:

Think about it what upcoming book features a character from the anti-reg side? Spidey goes back to the black costume so I think he makes it out of this fight but has to go rogue, if Ironman looses the goverment and the people are still pro-reg so the Civil War doesn’t end but if Cap gets killed or captured then that’s it no more anti-reg force no more Civil War, just a few B-class heroes out on the loose, I think its pretty obvious that Cap looses the war.

  84. import says:

Anybody get to Nightly News yet? I know it’s an acquired taste, but I was more excited about this one than any other book this week. I don’t get my books until the Monday after they come out, so I haven’t seen it yet. Was it more of the same great stuff as the first 2? Don’t spoil it for me yet though, just tell me how good it is…

I think it is honorable to do something that will cause you to lose your friends as long as, in your mind, its for the greater good. Especially if you dont agree with that ideal but know that it is better than the alternative. I just dont think the SHRA is better than the alternative that Tony fears of the government shutting down all superhumans. They need those guys to kill Galactus and stuff :)

I got to Hellstorm and Nightly News BTW.

Hellstorm is pretty good; and the main character has been looking for cock (not sex, an actual penis) for half the arc.

Nightly News is freakin awesome. I love everything about this book and I hope it continues to please.

  90. import says:

Fred, no I haven’t seen the Onslaught Reborn one, but I am definitely going to read it now.

Gaumer, yeah, Nightly News is a very nice balance to Civil War. With one title we have a fun superhero smash up and in the other one we have this exquisite piece of graphic fiction. Can I call this the Second Golden Age of comics?

  91. import says:

Dave, thank you for pointing out that site, I haven’t laughed that hard in a while. God I needed that.

Man, it took an hour to read all that. Good thing I’m at work.

Civil War, to me, has been an excellent commmentary on the current mob mentality/reactionary approach our government (and most of the American population) takes towards any and all adversity. Politicians, and in turn, Superheroes, are more concerned with public image – with appearing in control – that they lose sight of what is right/wrong on any moral front.

I love that Cap stands for dissent in the name of patriotism. And the last issue of Spidey really struck a chord with me (Conor as well).

Oh, and I’d drop origins if it wasn’t Wolverine. SUch an abusive relationship – he hits me because he loves me!

That’s funny. When #9 came out and I read it I was like well that’s not the worst thing ever. It wasn’t good but compared to the other 8 that had come before it, it was great. I felt like I had the fucking Stockholm Syndrome, as if way had raped me and damaged my soul enough to the point where I was beginning to like it. But then issue #10 came out with all the Wolverine crying and mullets and I was back to my old self.

  108. import says:

  112. import says:

Does anyone think the definition of a heroes and villians will be changed after Civil War to mean anyone whom is registered (regardless of their past) is a hero and anyone whom didn’t register (same)is a villian? Maybe not that cut and dry but I kind of got that sense from Thunderbolts, which after I read a second time firmly convinced me that it DOES take place in the aftermath of Civil War as it seems things are more cut and dry as to the public opinion of the heroes whom did and didn’t register than they are in any other Civil War book or tie-in.
And I’m getting sick of reading characters Straczynski writes saying, “Just sayin’”. Seems like those words appears in every book he writes every month coming out of a different character.

  113. import says:

ah, JMS fatigue. Relax Jeff, for you are among friends.

Actually, if Civil War ends, and registration is still the norm, it’s gonna be very similar to Powers, as well as Watchmen, and probably some other stuff where the heroes have been outlawed.

Oh my. Good point, Powers and Watchman.
And hearing I’m among friends, any other JMS critisisms are probably achingly redundant, yes? It’s just getting to be that reading the small utterance “Just sayin’” totally kills the rest of the book for me.

  116. import says:

I got rope-a-doped by JMS with Bullet Points, which had an excellent first issue a so-so second issue and a really rather bad third.

    I feel dirty.

  117. import says:

    if Civil War ends

    Key word IF

  118. import says:

I don’t follow JMS all that well but it seems like he starts off strong enough then shit goes downhill rather quickly. I got stung on Bullet Points as well. I feel bad I recommended it to several people based on that first issue, after reading 2 and 3.

  119. import says:

JMS is a hit and miss with me. I’m enjoying his FF stuff (even if it doesn’t work in other Civil War Cont.) And Spider-Man can sometimes be awesome, and sometimes just make you want to take out your eyes with hooks. Thought I recently realized that I had been buying Amazing for a year in a half now. Not even thinking about it. (A large part of that is attributed to Civil War of course, seeing as 8 of the issues takes place in Civil War). But when I got back into comics four years ago, if someone had told me that I’d be buying over a year of Amazing, I wouldn’t have belived them. And after Civil War, I’m going to keep buying it because of the Black Costume.

Does anyone else have a book like this? A book you just keep picking up without really knowing it. You look back and go “Holy Shit I just bought the last 20 of these!”

I thought I’d be that way with Wolverine Orgins…glad I’m not. Phew!!!

  120. import says:

I did that with Ex Machina while never quite getting to it. Once I realized it was that far I read it and it was great. Now it’s at the top of the stack when it comes out. Yes I trust bkv that much

  121. import says:

I love Ex Machina. My favorite books are the ones that I only buy in trade: 100 Bullets, Y the Last Man, Walking Dead, Ex Machina, and Fables. I just finished the latest Y trade and I’m amazed at how well thought out the characters are. Gotta add Jonah Hex to the list, too. I read the first trade in one sitting last night and now I’m hooked.

  122. import says:

Gotta say that JSA #2 was awesome. Johns really knows how to write a team book better than just about anyone out there. Add Eaglesham’s pencils to that and you’ve got a really top tier book. I went into this book not knowing a whole lot about any of the main characters in the JSA and it’s almost as if that didn’t matter. Contrast that with Thunderbolts where I also knew nothing about quite a few of the characters and I had no sense of where this book was heading at all. However, Dedato’s art was very nice. I did like the scene where Osbourne commented that Bullseye tasted scared.

  123. import says:

“Does anyone else have a book like this? A book you just keep picking up without really knowing it. You look back and go “Holy Shit I just bought the last 20 of these!”

Suddenly, I can’t think of a single example of this (before Netflix, I used to have to keep a list of movies I wanted to rent in my wallet because it was like the minute I actually entered the Blockbuster my mind rebooted, leaving me standing there saying, “‘Movie’? What’s a ‘movie’? I know I wanted to… rent… something”) but in my heart I know I have half a dozen such books in my regular stack.

Ooh! Like Ms. Marvel or Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man!

Books where I see how high the issue number is and think, “Holy God, does that actually mean this has been coming out for a year? And I’ve been buying it the whole time??”

  124. import says:

“Suddenly, I can’t think of a single example of this (before Netflix, I used to have to keep a list of movies I wanted to rent in my wallet because it was like the minute I actually entered the Blockbuster my mind rebooted, leaving me standing there saying, “‘Movie’? 125. import says:

Jimsky maybe you’re going senile(I forgot how to spell it)?

Well then, maybe I’m not the one who has a problem.

Seriously, though: there’s no doubt that 32 is coming soon and it’s bringing decrepitude with it, but the problem mentioned above is one I was having when I was 23. I’d have 20 records I wanted to buy, but I’d walk into a record store and suddenly blank on what any of them were.

Wait! Did I say “record”? Shit! I meant “CD”! I haven’t owned a record since I was six years old!

  126. import says:

I didn’t like Daniel Way before that comment and I freaking hate him now.

The only reason Origins sells that much is because of die hard Wolverine and X-Men fans. They all collectively cry themselves to sleep after every issue they purchase, but they have to purchase it none the less.

  127. import says:

I’ll admit I was once one of those fans that bought a book, cause Wolverine was on the cover. I didn’t know if my wallet would ever be the same. I always felt ashamed, but I always bought those damn books. I was an addict I admitted it that was the first step of course. I had been buying the normal “Wolverine” title for five years now. I would get old trades or back issues of Wolverine, honestly, I’m a product of being born in the late 80′s, where Wolverine was every where, and young boys loved, simple times they were.

Well like any addict. Before they have that moment of clarity, they have to go somewhere dark. It’s always darkest before the dawn as the saying goes. And “Wolverine Origins” and the fall out from House of M, were those moments of clarity. First it was simple things, like asking myself whither we, as fans, cared about Wolverine’s “Man of Mystery” shtick anymore. After House of M, Joe Q saying that “Wolverine wasn’t sure which were real memories and which were planted, that’s what the Origins book would be based around.” I asked myself, what’s the point then? Isn’t that what’s been happening for years? And then Origins came out. I like to give a book at least its first arc before I decided to keep going or not. Plus I love Steve Dillions art, so I wasn’t sure what could go wrong. Granted Way’s run on Wolverine’s original book wasn’t good. But I was hopeful.

But it was after finishing that first arc, that I had my moment of clarity. So many questions arouse…

“Why does Wolverine need a sword?”
    “Why he’s chasing Condoleeza Rice?”
    “Why’s he fighting Captain America?”
    “When does this take place?!”
“HE has a SON?! FUCK THIS BOOK!”

I’m and here my friends to tell you, my addiction was broke, perhaps I should thank Way, for writing a story so bad, that I no longer feel the need to pick up any book with Wolverine on the front, that I actually think before I jump into a series. That great characters, do not make a great story. You can drop this book, it

  128. import says:

You are a funny man Jimsky!!!!
Spiffy I am one of these die hard x-men/Wolverine fans, I don’t cry myself to sleep after every issue of Origins, I go to the gym and work out my frustrations (I hate you Daniel Way) I don’t know Daniel Way that much but he is shitting on one of my favorite characters of all time, why did Wolverine need a sword? Because its magical and kills anything in one cut (someone’s been reading Fables). But that arch wasn’t so bad, we never knew a single thing about Wolverine at Nam and even though it was kinda crappy I still enjoyed it, but then Daniel Way and I quote “Didn’t give a shit” anymore and begun to write his issues in one afternoon…… so now they suck, I have never dropped a Wolverine book (yes I have Wolverine vs Punisher) but I’m going to have to drop this one after the next issue, I’m curious to see how he fucks up Wolverine’s son. I think that Garth Ennis or Mark MIllar could do a good job at writting a Wolverine Origins book but no more Daniel Way.

  129. import says:

I’ve never read Wolverine Origins, and even though I love Dillon, Wolverine in this book looks like he’s on a very strict diet. On the other hand I read and liked a lot the Nighthawk miniseries that Way/Dillon did last year, even though it felt (I don’t know if it was for the dillon inclusion) like a little garth ennis wannabe.

The deal with Way vs. the Internerds… I think fighting on the internet is like fighting with a drunk…everyone is shooting in their own way and rarely a good point or agreement is reached…so, blah!. That’s why I love this site…all peace and comics.

and Conor, I seem to recall Ron warning you about JMS in a previous podcast…

    Next subject:
I’m curious to see how he fucks up Wolverine’s son.
Let’s start with the fact that he has a mullet

    Further:
I’m going to make a concerted effort to stop bitching about Origins. It won’t work but I’m giving it a shot. That list of questions above about #1 though, dead on I had all the same questions and I still do. Why does a guy whose hands have 6 fucking admantium blades in them need the Mirumasa blade? Answer is: he doesn’t. Thankfully it seems to be featured less now or maybe I’m just blocking it out

  131. import says:

I hate Wolverine: Origins too. I hate that Wolvie cried; I hate that Dum Dum died (presumably tho); I hate that he is in fact chasing around Condoleeza Rice; I hate that its so out of continuity with the rest of the books Wolvie is in.

But let me play the other side for just a second. Everyone on the web is bashing this book. Even Way himself has not helped (read above), but his take on a post House of M Wolverine is almost changing the character of Wolverine and I think it should. For the first time Wolvie really knows himself. Not just hints, rumors and hearsay; he remembers it first hand.

Now, Wolverine has done some really really bad stuff in his life and, for the first time, he realizes how much of a cruel bastard (and he’s actually a bastard) he has been for a really long time (100+ years). I think that would change me too. I think that in a 100+ year long life of doing horrible things to people and then remembering it all in one sudden instant could have an awakening effect on the character, and thats what I think Way is trying to show in his work.

I still dont much care for the book though, and Way has made it clear that he doesnt care what I think. But I hate to say that I will be buying Origins thru the next arc at least. I want to see where the character goes in this line and see if it flows over to the main book (and every other book he’s in) which has been really good since its start IMO. Just one guys thoughts tho.

  132. import says:

Wait, is Origins an ongoing series? I thought it was a miiniseries that got extended for a few more issues only god knows why)

  133. import says:

Yeah it’s an ongoing, and I believe I read that Way plans to stay on as long as the book goes because he claims he has “That many stories to tell”. And considering it takes the man five issues to tell a story that should be two, this book is going to be around a L-O-N-G time.

  134. import says:

Hate to break it to you Raph but Origins is an ongoing title. At the time it started, Way was writing the regular title and Origins at the same time and the thought was that he would continue to do that so that he could keep the continuity straight between the two. I’m not sure what happened but for whatever reason, he left the regular title rather quickly. Thank goodness he did otherwise, we wouldn’t have a decent Wolverine title to read at all.

  135. import says:

OK, now I’m gonna go cry myself to sleep, one of my favorite characters is getting destroyed……
    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  136. import says:

Erik Larsen’s column at cbr this week(http://comicbookresources.com/columns/?column=20) deals with buying original art pages and actually mentions a popular writer who had bought some allegedly stolen Steve Ditko Hulk pages and I actually found the origin of the ‘online controversy’. It was Peter David http://www.comicon.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=2;t=009249;p=0

  137. import says:

A friend just lent me a classic & translated copy of a comic book called America vs. The Justice Society.. I remember a reference of this in the Geoff Johns JSA. The main issue is that a (dead) batman accuse the Justice society (of earth two)in his diary of being traitors…and the justice society is called to unmask in front of the comission of antiamerican activities. There’s an obvious comparison to civil war, but the way it’s handled and the way superman reacts in comparison to Captain america. Interesting to read this time.

  138. import says:

    America vs. The Justice Society.

Seems to me I heard about this a little while ago, before Civil War fatigue set in. What year was it published?

Was I the only person who thought Omega Flight was going to be a series? I was just browsing the covers of upcoming solicitations, and they say “Omega Flight #1 (of 5).”

  139. import says:

I finally got around to reading my books. It was light week for me:

Justice Society would have been my PoW for certain. I loved the characterization of Wildcat’s son. As someone who never knew their father and yet wasn’t tortured by it, it’s nice to see a characterization like that. I also really liked the moment between Stargirl (my favorite JSAer) and Maxine Hunkel, Hawkman’s surprising re-entrance, and great reveal that Starman is the Thom Kallor from Kingdom Come. This is what a super-hero team book should be like.

I think this is the penultimate chapter of BKV’s Runaways, and although I’m excited for the last issue, I thought the twist that Chase was planning on killing himself to get Gert back was kind of lame. I’m interested to see what’s going on with the disembodied Gert voice, though. One note, I love Alphona’s art. I wonder what he ends up on next.

The story in 52 was great this week. Lobo (finally) unleashed. The shocking death of Animal Man (wow – I didn’t see that coming. I guess you really do kill your babies). Rip Hunter in the Bottle City of Kandor. This really has been a tour through the DCU. Can’t wait for Supernova v. Skeets. The biggest twist was in my favorite story of the Question and Renee. I have the sneaking suspicion it’s not Vic who is going to die in 52, but rather Renee.

As always, Judd Winick’s books have scenes I love and scenes I hate. He does write Jason Todd well, but two books with the Red Hood in one week? Overkill. And as much as I LOVE Scott McDaniel for the action sequences, does he SUCK at the quiet moments or what? Really, his style is great for dynamic action, but that page in Green Arrow this week when Ollie is trying to console Batman about Jason was awful. I wondered what it would look like in the hands of someone who can draw emotion, like Rags Morales.

And Thunderbolts was good enough for me to buy again. I was wrong about Deodato. That was good.

  140. import says:

    America vs. justice Society –
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/America_vs._The_Justice_Society

It’s 1985, Roy Thomas – It’s not an elseworld but it’s set on earth two, it’s kind of weird because issue two is the whole JSA in a court room and the spectre appears to demand justice. It also has hitler and infinity inc.

  141. import says:

Yesterday I bought volume 1 of Girls. Read it in one sitting then today went and got volumes 2 and 3. Wow! I can’t believe this series isn’t talked about more. It’s fantastic! This week I’ve given two books you guys recommended (Girls and Jonah Hex)a try this week and both were great. Thanks!

  142. import says:

    podcast notes:
I think that you guys said or implied that Origins was only 12 issues – not true actually an ongoing

also I’m now 32 hours into my concerted effort to stop complaining about it and so far so good. i’m looking at you conor. I’m a little itchy but otherwise ok.

  143. import says:

also, not comic related, but there seem to be a lot of 24 fans here. With it back tonight, are we going to have threads on it?

  144. import says:

I would love a twenty four thread maybe you can start it tomorrow. Please!!!!!

  145. import says:

jack bauer thinks chuck norris is a pussy

  146. import says:

This just hit me. Connor is a young John C. Dvorak!!!

    You all three rule.

  147. import says:

    1. I don’t recall ever implying that Wolverine:Origins was only 12 issues, if we (or I did), we were wrong, DEAD WRONG. I am aware of the fact that its an ongoing and I love it and hope they never cancel it.

    2. Conor as a Young comics style Dvorak? Genius, I love it.

  148. import says:

    24 Thread Please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  149. import says:

I haven’t heard the podcast yet, but here’s a question, ron you don’t really like Origins right? Please tell me you were kidding, thats……. just……*head explodes*

  150. import says:

Anybody watch football here? Damm those Patriots are lucky!!!!!!!!

  151. import says:

Just listened to the podcast And I’m, well, I’m pissed. Yeah, I sent in a voicemail, I didn’t expect to be make fun of.

Not to get too defensive but.

    1. I was “at the Gym” I don’t need to falisly build yself up in front of people I’ll never even meet, the whole mentioning of my location as I relate a thought is just the way I talk.

BTW: I’m a starter on my school fotball teams defensive A-team and finished a five sack season in October

    2. Don’t make fun of my voice, I had a sinus infection when I called.

    3. The whole DC vs. Marvel question was stupid, but as I said before, I was sick and in a cold-med fueled moment of stupididy, I set the voicemail

Whew, okay I’m cool now. Anger’s past
iFanboy is still the best comics site on the web

  152. import says:

You know, Mr. Gun, I didn’t get the sense that they were actually making fun of you at all, but rather making fun of every stereotypical comics fan by contrasting them to you. Which is why I’m pissed at them now.

Seriously, though: did you get Conorbooed? No? Then I think you’re okay.

(Note to self: stop trying to make “Conorboo” happen. It isn’t going to happen.)

  153. import says:

whoa Six Gun – we loved your voicemail! It was a great fun question and it made us laugh, alot if I remember correctly. We’re totally sorry if seemed like we were making fun of you specifically, we weren’t…glad to hear your anger’s past but don’t be pissed, we heart Six Gun!

  154. import says:

(Note to self: stop trying to make “Conorboo” happen. It isn’t going to happen.)

    Boooooo, Jimski. Boooo.

  155. import says:

SIX GUN! You must chill! We kid each other like friends around here. Have you heard the horrible shit Conor and Ron have said about me? Or vice versa? It’s a sign of affection on the podcast. Please don’t take it personally. Besides, I was joking about the comic book fanboy fatties of stereotype rather than you specifically. LOVE US!

  156. import says:

    ron
if we (or I did), we were wrong
    I think it was Josh
though I do have problems telling the difference

  157. import says:

“Have you heard the horrible shit Conor and Ron have said about me?”

I do occasionally expect to hear one of you say, “All right. It’s Go Time,” and then a series of rumbling crashes and yelps.

  158. import says:

    Yup I overreacted, mea culpa.

  159. import says:

series of rumbling crashes and yelps

  160. import says:

I never said a word about Origins, because I know nothing of it. So it must have been Ron.

  161. import says:

my ears are confused once again
    my apologies

  162. import says:

It was ron, he posted somthing about it too.

  163. import says:

    I’m terrified of Darrel.

  164. import says:

Is it Darrel o Darron?, I can

  165. import says:

This is off topic, but I’m in the market to buy Captain America #1-#16 (The Brubaker Run.

If anyone’s interested in selling, send me an email. Thanks

  166. import says:

Conor is right… I know it’s my own fault that Way gets to keep writing Origins, but I don’t know what to do.

I propose this. All of us Wolverine fans refuse to buy Origins until Way gets kicked off. Then we go back and buy back issues or trades so we can still have the mutilated bastard child of a story that we all want, and keep our collections intact.

    La, la, la…

    Adding some more lines…

Man, I feel bad about wasting a post.

    BOYCOTT ORIGINS!

  171. import says:

It seems like people might not want to be spoiled any further, Fred.

    What say you, people?

  172. import says:

If that is the general feeling I won’t post them anymore

  173. import says:

Is it Darrel or Darron?, I can?t tell in the podcast

That would be Darrel. I WISH I could argue that well.

    ; – )

  174. import says:

Is it just me?: did all mention of World War Hulk vanish a few months back? Is it just crossover fatigue, or am I imagining things, or what?

  175. import says:

Just read JSA. Anybody else think it’s odd that after someone is killed, Stargirl’s words of comfort are first “This happens all the time” and then “Let’s go shopping!”
I want to like this book, but little things keep bugging me.

  176. import says:

Do comics come out on thursday this week?

  177. import says:

    not according to diamond’s website

  178. import says:

According to solicitation 52 is going to be just 4 thick TPB’s…those are going to be huge reads. I remember DC saying that they weren’t going to publish TPB’s of 52… I’m glad they just bluffed.

  179. import says:

I hope they do, I wanna read the sumbitch real bad (even though I don’t wanna see Animal Man offed),but I don’t wanna have to hunt for all 52 effing issue. I only have issue 1-3, 6, and 27. Don’t ask.

  180. import says:

DC said they weren’t going to publish trades until it was all over. That got convoluted on the internet as meaning they weren’t ever going to do it.

  181. import says:

Nevermind. First volume comes out May 30th.

    52 VOLUME 1 TP
Written by Geoff Johns, Grant Morrison, Greg Rucka, Mark Waid
    Breakdowns by Keith Giffen
    Art by various
    Cover by J.G. Jones
After the INFINITE CRISIS, the DCU spent a year without Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman

  182. import says:

‘Is it just me?: did all mention of World War Hulk vanish a few months back? Is it just crossover fatigue, or am I imagining things, or what?’

Jimski, I’ve not been lurking for long anough to know whether or not all mention has indeed disappeared, but if anyone wants to discuss it I’m toally on board! Planet Hulk is so very, very good – and to think i nearly dropped that title due to 5 dreadful fill-in issues by this boards own pet peeve – Mr Daniel Way. Is World War Hulk where he comes back to earth and punishes everyone for firing him into space? As someone who isn’t too keen on the idea of the Illuminati, especially after how they betrayed the Hulk it’s probably the event I am most looking forward to in 2007.

  183. import says:

who is going to stop buying Origins?

  184. import says:

um. well, after hearing all the negativity about it on the podcasts, i gave it a shot to see if i hated it yesterday..i’m caught up now, and i…kinda didn’t mind it.
    *ducks*

I love Dillon’s art, and while the mohawk’d son/wolvie actually crying(!!???) bit sucked, overall i didn’t hate it.

OH. you know what? Here’s the thing. Even though I know everything that’s wrong with the Daredevil movie, I still saw it with my wife 5 times in the theatre (she loved it) and I’ve been known to put it in for background noise while I’m inking. It’s not a great movie, or even a good one, but for some reason, I actually straight up ENJOY it.

THAT’s how I feel about Origins. It’s not good, but I’m enjoying it anyway.

  185. import says:
  186. import says:

  196. import says:

I dont hate Paltrow but i just dont think shes a good actress. She plays the victim too much in her movies. I think the movie has too many big names in it and its taking away from the film.

  197. import says:

Taking away from the film in what sense?
