iFanboy - Episode #131 - Comic Book Conventions

The Comic Book Convention is the ultimate visceral experience for the comic book fan. Luckily iFanboy are veterans of the Con circuit, and are here to give you the lay of the land.

Josh, Ron and Conor have been to their share of comic book conventions over the year, and just as the big Comic-Con International is kicking off in San Diego, iFanboy is magically with you to tell you about the Con Experience. What can you expect on the show floor, at panels, with creator interactions for signings and sketches. From the smaller conventions like Windy City Comicon in Chicago, Emerald City ComiCon and Heroes in North Carolina to the bigger shows like the New York Comicon, to the granddaddy of them all in San Diego, comic book conventions are the best way to experience the world of comics and pop culture that we love so much.

Great episode, guys! Awesome work on the edit, Josh.

Oh, how I love my Cliff Chiang sketch. Thanks for showcasing it!

Excellent intro. Oscars all around.

Thank you for the informative video. The only relatively large Con I have been to from your list is Dragon*Con. I enjoyed it a great deal. Dragon*Con is not primarily a Comic Book Convention. There are a number of excellent creaters taking part in it this year (Mignolia, Darwyn Cooke, etc), but it is a very broad Con that attempts to cover all of geekdom. It is also a bit less crowded and considerably more laid back than ComicCon (based on how your described it).

I feel I must also point out that I have never seen a greater concentration of attractive women in one location than I saw last year at Dragon*Con (and I taught at the University of Kentucky, if you know what I'm saying).  For the sake of equality, I must also point out that there were a number of attractive men present as well (specifically, Jamie Bamber of BSG fame was present).

I hope you guys enjoy ComicCon. I would love to see you at Dragon*Con sometime.

@Conor - Atlanta is known for having some of the best strip clubs in the country. As a chaste young man, I have never visited any of them, but I hear they are fabulous.

@Paul - Do you get paid extra (or at all) for single handedly manning the website this week?

Posted by stuclach on 07/22/09 at 09:28 AM

@stulach - A box of wine and a canister of Emerald nuts.

Posted by PaulMontgomery on 07/22/09 at 09:53 AM

@Paul - Bon appétit.

I love how good old WonderCon got a Full House picture.  Damn I miss that show.

It might also be worth mentioning that when you go to a con, just have fun.  Don't let it get to you that it's crowded, or that dude smells, or someone brought their stroller and is pushing it around the con floor.  You're there to have a good time, make the most of it and don't waste it being upset.

Conor has a new coffee table?

Posted by Gabe on 07/22/09 at 01:39 PM

@Gabe: No....

Anyone hear the sirens in the middle of the show? the cops are coming for the iFanboys! for the copy right laws on the Hurm shirts lol

Posted by Aquaman on 07/22/09 at 01:47 PM

Very very very good show. I will always keep this in mind no matter what con I go to.

Which reminds me, I need to go to a comic con in my lifetime.

But let's talk about the highlight of this issue.....Sonia as Black Widow *growls* :)

da coach!

Very cool show.  I have yet to go to any of the bigger comic-cons, I hope to go to Emerald City, since i live here in good ol Portland, OR.  I actually like going to the smaller cons in my area, like Stumptown.  It's mostly your average guys who are on the verge of breaking in, getting their creator owned projects out there.  It's very cool.  Last year I saw and talked with Jeff Smith, and he had a panel talking about RASL and previewed some upcoming pages.  It was great.

I definitely need to make it to San-Diego, but, probably not for a couple of years considering how much money and planning it seems to take.

How do you guys plan out your itinerary.  I'm sure you've run into the situation of trying to choose between two things going on at the same time.  How frustrating!  How far in advance do you guys plan out your stay?

Keep on keepin on guys.  I love your stuff!!

San Diego is a great con but it's been a while since I've been able to go.  All this talk about it just makes me want to go to just about any con.  Anyone planning on going to the Mid-Ohio-Con?  Has anyone been before?  Is it worth it?

Posted by JeffR on 07/22/09 at 05:42 PM

I forgot to mention: Whoever did the editing did a fantastic job on this. It must've been a bitch to edit but you really made this video look so damn good.

Round of applause!

Oh Darwyn Cooke....

Posted by CalebTheTimeTraveler on 07/23/09 at 12:25 AM

oh if you are like me and can't take stand around all day bringing a small camp chair is great.  You don't need your whole foot bliststed up for a week after a con.  Having a buddy makes it easyer too.  Me and my boyfriend took turns waitting on lines for plannels at New York this year.  It's also someone to hold your stuff while you have to crowd weave to get to the restrooms.  I find being short and knowing  how to work crowd flow is a good skill.

Posted by yamiangie on 07/23/09 at 02:13 AM

You don't always have to weave through crowds to get to a restroom. You can always bring one of these:

"Oh Hey You're Jim Lee."

"What are you doing with that Golf Club?"

If one is planing to purchase a large number of back issues, does anyone have suggestions for transporting them back to the hotel?

Posted by PoppinFreshDoh on 07/25/09 at 01:40 PM

Those are the times you regret not going to that gay cub&bear meeting with your experimental friend.

Posted by chlop on 07/25/09 at 05:38 PM

what's with Ron's eyes in this episode.  Did Con-plague set in early?

Posted by ABirdseysView on 07/27/09 at 09:30 PM

Loved the latest episode, guys.  It was pretty great to watch only days after being there.  Takes me back.

One of the best things about the con for me this year was the parties.  Sure, it's super fun to meet your heroes in booths and whatnot, but it can't really beat having a drink with them.

Posted by LessThan1337 on 07/28/09 at 12:49 AM

Easily one of the funniest intros in a while. It's probably Josh's face that does it.

This is some helpful advice, because I'll be going to my first con next year, and this is stuff I need to know.

Posted by Jurassicalien on 07/29/09 at 12:23 AM

Certain keywords, Josh?  Marvel-Man..

Posted by Gabe on 07/31/09 at 12:15 AM

@TheNextChampion... Thats not Sonja in the Black Widow costume. She's not that tall.

Posted by PymSlap on 07/31/09 at 12:50 AM

@Pymslap: I thought she dressed up as Black Widow last year? With her brother as Spider-Man.

Posted by TheNextChampion on 07/31/09 at 12:51 AM

@ The NextChampion

Hey man, you replied hella fast! i had that grover book when i was a wee-one.

what was your pick of the week?

Posted by PymSlap on 07/31/09 at 12:54 AM

@Pymslap: I have a laptop for every room in my house. That way I keep a close eye on everyone.

I had no POTW cause I had no new issues for this week.

Posted by TheNextChampion on 07/31/09 at 01:00 AM

Podcasters talking San Diego '09 at Ken P.D. Snydecast. It's called Nerd-a-palooza, which is awesome because Lollapalooza is only a week away and I'm going to get to see Lou Reed!

I haven't bought my books this week, but I'm eager for J.J.J.s obituary of Spider-Man in Issue 2 of Requiem, and Unknown Soldier has yet to let me down.

@JumpingJupiter - That post is awesome. They make missing the con a bit more bearable. Also, anything featuring a pic of Dr. Steve Brule is OK in my book.

Posted by stuclach on 07/31/09 at 01:52 PM

Fuck them Vampire Bait, I like Tim & Erik! They did this whole thing about tennis, and I loved it because I have no idea how to keep score.

Posted by PymSlap on 07/31/09 at 07:27 PM

The Black Widow with my brother was a man. A very tall man. I've never dressed up as the Black Widow, or dressed up at a convention at all.

I have to say, I'm a little creeped out that you think I look like a man in drag.

Posted by soniaharris on 08/02/09 at 08:29 PM

@sonia: Oh....well uh....I didn't know I mean...

gotta go! *runs away*

(I'm very sorry about it, I had no idea.)

Posted by TheNextChampion on 08/02/09 at 08:34 PM

Ron I must say, your eyes have looked better. What was it: late night? poison ivy? biker fight?

Posted by s30 on 08/02/09 at 08:38 PM

@TNC There's the halloween photo. Maybe your mind switched those two...somehow
