Show Notes

For the past year or so, Marvel has been producing and releasing motion comics to the public. These slightly animated adaptations of popular works have been much discussed by fans and discovered by non-fans alike. The latest entry is Iron Man: Extremis, adapting Warren Ellis and Adi Granov’s story. We spoke with Ruwan Jayatilleke, a VP at Marvel, about Iron Man: Extremis, the various motion comics from Marvel, what the difference between a motion comic and animation is, as well as some speculation over future motion comics from Marvel for Captain America and Thor.

Running Time: 00:58:58

If you haven’t checked out Iron Man: Extremis, be sure to check out the trailer to episode 3, which was released on May 12.  More information about Marvel Motion Comics can be found at Marvel.com/motioncomics.

  1. I loved that bit about character name pronunciation!  I had a big discussion (believe it or not) with a buddy the other day about how to pronounce Rahne Sinclair’s (Wolfsbane), first name, Ronnie or Rain.  Ive ALWAYS said Ronnie, but I guess I’m in the minority (according to him).  Incidentally, Ive recently noticed that Ron pronounces Archangel, ARCH-angel as opposed to ARC-angel.  I love this shit.

Oh, and my vote for  Ruwan’s "mystery editor"  my vote goes to Steve Wacker.

Listened to this excellent conversation today. I liked the diversions you Ruwan went on regarding content and its cost. Well reasoned. And, I may actually buy this motion comic through iTunes. I dug SPIDER-WOMAN, mostly because it was a story I’d never read before. I’m skipping GIFTED, since I have read it, but I’ve never read EXTREMIS. Looks like it could be fun.

  3. It’s definitely ARK-angel. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

  4. Avatar photo Paul Montgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

Don’t take Josh’s word for it. (Heathen)

As a former altar boy I can tell you, ARK-angel.

    Carry on.

  5. Hi all. Thanks for taking time to listen to me ramble as Ron was very patient and tried to keep me on topic.

ifanboy was a great experience and hopefully they will have me on when i am less-allergy plagued and more topical. maybe they will have me back when i announce my next big project with superstar….???

     Cheers,

    R

p.s.–it ain’t Wacker–that guy is a thespian or something. keep guess though!

  6. wait it’s not Archie-angel??? ha

  7. I downloaded the first three episodes to my PS3 last night, and enjoyed it alot. This seems a lot more polished than Astonishing Xmen or Spiderwoman.  Only criticism is that sometimes the moving mouths can look a little strange. I never read Extremis so I’m going to experience it this way.

    Thanks Ruwan!

  8. Hey AlanRob, thanks for the support. I agree the mouth CGI is something we are still trying to perfect with the static comic book art. I think we will get there as we do more of these, but I agree there can be uncanny moment here and there. Overall I think we are making looks as we close in on more perfected mouth movements. Again, thanks for the support and keeping the flow positive on the motion comics. We definitely want to giuve people the bext experience possible within our means and control. 🙂

  9. Great talk and insight into the motion comic initiative by Marvel.

Ruwan, you have a pretty bad verbal tic… "you know"… doesn’t bother me and I don’t think less of you but just letting you know [haha, here, used correctly] so you can sound better on future podcasts.

    Keep up the good work!

  10. How often are new episodes going to be published?
