iFanboy #223 – Robert Kirkman at San Diego Comic-Con 2011

Show Notes

It’s become an annual tradition from the floor of San Diego Comic-Con! But this year, are things different? Has Robert Kirkman been changed by all the success? Did Hollywood take the lovable Kentucky comic book writer, and turn him into something else?

Something darker?

If we were able to get through to the jaded, pampered and very likely cocaine addled former good guy, we’d ask him about The Walking Dead, Image Comics and Skybound, The Infinite, Brian K. Vaughan, Super Dinosaur, Invincible and more.

But it’s too bad what happened to him.

  1. I’ve never noticed how similar Robert Kirkman and Paul Montgomery look before.

  2. Kirkman again…. It’s like the sixth or seventh time you’ve interviewed him, it’s boring. How about some DC execs talking about the reboot. Far more interesting than talking about the Walking Dead (been covered numerous times) & The Infinite and Super Dinosaur (who cares, they are gonna be cancelled soon enough any way). Can we get Ed Brubaker or Grant Morrison please?!

@TheGoddamnDeadpool  We both have beards I guess.

  4. “If we were to get through with the jaded, pampered and very likely cocaine addled former good guy”

What kinds of things are you and Kirkman going through together?

  5. I like the guy waiting for the autograph in the background.

  6. Love the beggining 😛

  7. @Lovedrop I think Kirkman makes himself a lot more available than the other guys you mentioned.

  8. Avatar photo Paul Montgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

Guys. This is not the only SDCC video you’ll be seeing on iFanboy. If you want to see other creators, just hang tight. That said, Kirkman is never not entertaining.

  9. I’d be happy with a Kirkman show every week. He’s a funny guy. Looking forward to the rest of the SDCC shows. Hoping we’ll have Brian Wood, Johnathon Ross, or BKV somewhere in one of the shows.

  10. *sigh*

  11. I LOVE that still image of Mr. Kirkman for the video.  I’m laughing and I haven’t even started watching it yet.

  12. Brightened my day! Great work guys!

  13. @davidtobin100  2 out of 3 of those.

  14. Was that a skunk?

  15. @ericmci  Slow day at the office, then?

  16. Haters gonna hate. Entertaining show, iFanboys!

  17. @MadMartigan  I hadn’t noticed him till you mentioned it. lol I don’t get autograph seekers. To me i wonder what the point is. Any time i’ve run into a ” celebrity ” all i would want is a pic with them. To prove i met them. What does a scribble do? meh.

  18. Kirkman is always the highlight of your con coverage for me. Always a fun show. I would also happily watch him every week.

  19. @Lovedrop Why assume super dinosaur and the infinite are going to be canceled? Its kirkman, I’m sure they’ll stick around until he wants to stop.

  20. That was great.  Met him last year and he was one of the nicest guys I’ve met.  Quick story, When I was in line to meet him, I was told to only have two things for him to sign.  In my hand was Invincible #1 and The Walking Dead #1.  I also had Haunt, and other random stuff.  When I got up to see him, I gave him my two #1’s and said thanks. Before I could walk away, he asked if I had other stuff.  I said I did, but I was told I could only have 2 items signed.  He litteraly said: “Fuck That! What else ya got?”  I gave him my Haunt and A couple hardbacks.  A gal came over and said I could only have two things signed and Kirkman gave her a look and told her to chill out and he will take as long as he wants to.  The gal walked away like someone kicked her dog.

  21. @Josh: Great! Thanks!

  22. robert kirkman needs his own show. i mean if hes gonna go hollywood then he might as well go all the way.he’s allways my favorite interview in these con vids. great tag team action cant recall the last time u guys tagged team an interview. very very funny stuff guys.

  23. Kirkman is a funny guy. He needs a podcast or his own show..i don’t think he stays busy enough. =)

I was listening to this show in the background as i was doing morning emails he sounded like Charlie from Always Sunny. Kinda surreal actually.

  24. why all the hate? jeez! Obviously there will be more coverage coming! I always look forward to the robert kirkman show and this may be my favorite one ye!

@josh great job on this episode it was a blast (as always) thanks for getting done and out so quick

@lovedrop if over exposure is your concern, the reboot of all topics should be the last thing you want to hear about! all you are gonna get from a dc exec about the reboot is a restatement of the same stuff you’ve heard from the PR department 100 times a day on cbr or any other comics site

  25. @wallythegreenmonster  funny you said that he really does sound like Charlie!

    WILDCARD bitches!

  26. Honesty, if this really was the only thing you guys came back from San Diego with, I’d be fine with that.

  27. Yes! Best one yet! I don’t know how these keep getting better but they always do! Best writer and interviewee! Josh was funny too. “fucking Spielberg is a dick!”

  28. Love that man

  29. Yup, fun as always. I’ve never really been able to get into Kirkman’s writing, to be honest, but interviews with him are always fun. Can’t wait for more Comic Con footage. Great work as always guys!

  30. Whoa… Marvel has become a parody of themselves.

  31. I, for reasons I cannot understand (Zombies!?  Science Dog!?!?  SUPER DINOSAUR?!?!?! FUCK YEAH!) cannot get in to Kirkmans books.  But hot damn, does he seem like an awesome guy.

  32. Another one for the books. What a great guy. Nicely done fellas.

  33. It’s funny how you guys don’t even really ask him much about his books anymore.

  34. HAH Joaquin Phoenix’d

  35. As much as I would like to see some different con footage, Kirkman always brightens my day.

  36. @lovedrop I’d rather hear Kirkman being funny and just shooting the shit then some DC exec pussyfooting around the new 52.

  37. The Kirkman Show is always great!  I hope Joe Casey returns as well.  If not, Kirkman did a great Casey.

  38. “Would you ask Tom Petty that question?”

  39. i didn’t realize this was an annual tradition…are all the old videos on your youtube channel?

  40. @wallythegreenmonster  The first one is here. The second one is here.

  41. Robert kirkman is one of the few things from a talent/celebrity angle that’s right with Comic-Con. He makes time for everyone and doesn’t cop the “superstar” attitude that way too many do.

  42. @400yrs  Casey’s story arc has concluded and he’s never going to appear on the video show again. Really.

Also, that wasn’t a Casey impression, I don’t think. Then again, maybe it was.

  43. @josh Aww….you guys were so hilarious! Like Bosom Buddies but without the drag.

  44. i feel for kirkman, i know i hate when my golden cadillac collection gets so big that i have to stack them

  45. @conor  –oh cool…thanks for the links.

  46. @Lovedrop  you can find the SDCC DC panel  talking about the reboot amongst the chats here: http://www.youtube.com/user/VsxFedora,just scroll down and chose. I attended the Kirkman panel, and it was far more entertaining. I see why ifanboy posted another kirkman interview.

  47. Kirkman is awesome. iFanboy and kirkman, perfect match. great show guys.

  48. I really wanted to just comment and say that I am pumped that the guys at Ifanboy like good music. Jawbreaker is one of my favorite bands and Robert Kirkman is one of my favorite writers. Boom.

  49. Kirkman was hilarious!

  50. I really enjoyed the Joe Casey interviews, too.

  51. If things had gone differently for Mr. Kirkman methinks he could have been a comedian.  Swell video dudes!

  52. @400yrs Of course this is comics podcasting. We all know Casey will eventually be rebooted or relaunched.  iFanboy makes too much money off him what with the toys, the licensing, the t-shirts.  We’ll eventually see him back, perhaps in a grittier version with more pouches.  Then again, he’s a legacy character so we may see one of his kids show up and kick Josh in the shins.  Just enjoy the journey.

Great Kirkman interview and perfect button line.

  53. Awesome video (as ever).

One question:  How come you guys don’t ask him about Image United?  Is it “the project that is not to be mentioned”?

  54. @BizDaddy  We barely asked him about anything. Also, speaking for myself, I don’t really care. There are a lot of artists involved and they’re not getting it done. I’m not gonna hammer him for it, and I wasn’t reading it anyway.

  55. @ josh.  I didn’t mean that in a pissed off fanboy way or even to hammer him about it.  I just thought it was a cool project to see all the artists working together and no one’s mentioned it in a while.

  56. @BizDaddy I wouldn’t bring it up if I was them either.

  57. Well Rob Liefeld has no problem tweeting it was a failure to everyone involved. Including him!

What an insane but wonderful man.

  58. what an epic beard

  59. Funniest episode yet!

    Ineptitude!

  60. Kirkman is a king! Glorious as always.

  61. Kirkman is my new hero.
