iFanboy Video Podcast

iFanboy #133 – San Diego Comic-Con 2009 (Part Two)

Show Notes

Sterling Gates, the latest rising star at DC Comics, checks in to talk about Supergirl, working with James Robinson, Greg Rucka, and Geoff Johns, and his two new books: Kid Flash and World’s Finest. He also reveals what fueled some of his own teen angst.

Before the movie comes out and he gets too big to talk to us, Bryan Lee O’Malley gives an update on all things Scott Pilgrim: the movie, the video game, and the final volume of the acclaimed series.

Antony Johnston and Christopher Mitten talk Wasteland, which is the first long running on-going series for both creators.

Terry Moore couldn’t be happier about Echo, especially since he just sold the movie rights for a big bag with a $ symbol on it. You know you’re dealing with an old pro when they bring their own press to an interview (or just happen to have it there on the table when the cameras show up).

Hey! Someone from iFanboy finally cracks Joe Casey!

Image Comics founder Todd McFarlane is back at the drawing table on multiple projects, and he’s here with the scoop. And Mr. McFarlane has no comment on any alleged sex scandals.

Suddenly James Robinson  is everywhere in the DCU! From multiple Superman books, to reshaping the Justice League of America, to his love of DC Comics history, he talks about it all here!

Make sure you come back next week for more SDCC coverage!

  1. I think this was my favorite show ever.  Great job guys!

Also, you say there is one more con show, plus more Darwyn Cooke goodness?!!

  2. Looks like James Robinson made eye contact with Josh several times this interview. I think he’s starting to warm up to you!

  3. Sterling Gates is awesome and Mike Romo wins again. Great comedic chops on that guy. Joe Casey never ceases to entertain. Thanks, again.

  4. Needs more MAYHEM!

  5. "Ifanboy.com interview with James Robinson. Now with 50% more eye contact!"

Couple of thoughts with the whole video. By the way it was yet another fantastic SDCC interview. Whoever decided to edit the whole thing must be tired as hell, but it was very much worth it.

-I need to read more of Supergirl. Before I decided to give up on the whole ‘New Krypton’ storyline I must admit Gates kept me interested in the girl. It was only two to three issues I read of it; but it honestly kept me more interested then what Rucka, Johns, and Robinson were doing.

-Once again you seem to creep out O’Malley again Ron with this hair thing. Plus a video game based on a film, which is based on a comic, which is influenced by video games? *head explodes*

-Joe Casey was gold just as ever. I had no idea where this thing with Mike Romo was going but I thought it was hilarious. One nitpick, and it’s just a nitpick, but where the heck was Sonia in all of this? Perfect revenge right here for all the bollocks he was putting her in.

-Once again, James Robinson never ceases to amaze me on how prim and proper he is. Not in a good way mind you, but still it was nice that he decided to acknowledge you at points josh. Maybe it’s because he sounds like Michael Caine that kept me staying threw the whole interview.

  6. Yea, the Robinson interview was a lot more smooth this time around.  He still seems pretty standoffish, but Josh did an awesome job of rolling with it.  Thumbs up to Mr. Flanagan.

  7. Although the iFanboy crew is generaly great, Ron is probably the master of the con-interview. i never thought id see a Todd Mcfarlane interview on this show. good catch, guys. also enjoyed your interview with Bryan Lee O’Malley [you guys have great banter] and with Terry Moore, i’d say it was the best interview with him yet.

also enjoyed Joe Casey, as per usual. good stuff. can’t wait for the next show.

Sterling Gates is the man! One of my favorite (Relatively)new writers these days. Supergirl is always a lot of fun. So glad he’s getting even more projects to work on.

  9. Sterling Gates……his brothers name must be Rusty Gates. Zing!

    Heavens to Murgatroyd…

  11. This shall forever be remembered (by me) as the year I missed the huggingest/mayhemest SDCC of all time.

Congrats to Mike Romo on his interviewing breakthrough.

@cromulent @TNC – I also notice Mr. Robinson seemed much more receptive this time.  Good for him and good for Josh.  That was a solid interview.

  12. wow..Todd McFarlane? If you guys got Liefeld I could die happy.

  13. Damn Romo, way to step it up!!  Good show.

Damn excited to hear about the Kid Flash ongoing.  I’m not reading Supergirl, but hear great things about Gates’ mad writing skills.  Can’t wait for that to come out.

Regards to Robinson; he’s a nice dude.  I met him at Wondercon and he is a very laid back and friendly man.  Maybe he just doesn’t like doing video interviews.  Who knows.  But if he honestly had a problem with Josh or iFanboy, I doubt he would even do an interview with them, let alone two.

  14. @ stuclach yeah I’m just busting balls. But you gotta admit, you could see the underlying seething hatred that Robinson has for Josh in his eyes. Just saying

  15. @cromulent – I didn’t notice the hatred this time.  It seemed more like subtle longing.

  16. @ stuclach hmmm….yes yes I think you’re right on that. My bad.

  17. I think Robinson is just nervous on camera that’s all.

  18. James is a rad guy – he has no problems with iFanboy (at least that we’re aware of) – lots goes on at cons and sometimes it’s hard to get undistracted interviews from many creators (try going back a few WonderCon eps and watch my Becky Cloonan interview – whewf, that was a rough one)

     But James Robinson rock, period.

  19. Romo/Casey sequence was hilarious. "Lets Hug it out!"

  20. @muddi900 – TOTALLY agree.  Watched that bit three times already today.  LOVED IT, particularly the tender moment of Mike Romo’s farewell to Casey, "Bye, Joe…"

  21. what two episodes of San Diego Comic-con and no MAYHEM coverage?

  22. We bring you Mayhem in the age old style of verbal storytelling.  It’s better that way.

  23. Great show everyone!  🙂

And thanks for covering so varied artists and writers.  Hope there’s more to come!

  24. There is indeed more.

  25. Robert Kirkman was on the previous episode was hilarious and exciting to watch speak.  He should get a monthly video cast on Ifanboy to spotlight his stuff.  Just tell jokes and such about comics and life.

Looking forward to seeing Terry Moore and Todd McFarlane.

  26. Now you guys say you were stuck near the MAY-HEM panel for a couple of hours. Is there any footage of that? I have to see it cause I can’t find any videos on it.

  27. @ TheNextChampion, there’s footage of the whole, May-Hem shennanigans goings on at SDCC on YouTube.  😉

  28. It wasn’t a panel. They went roaming.  They had a table too.  But i don’t think we actually shot any of it.  It wasn’t funny at the time as much as it was irritating.  Plus, I didn’t want to get caught pointing a camera at them, because they might come talk to me.

  29. …and make you buy mayhem on tape. oh hell no… you’d have to buy it too, else they might pop a cap in yow ass. street stal, homie. best mayhem inda hood.

  30. Y’all should let the viewers know when episodes are being presented in BallerVision!

  31. JOSH! That t-shirt… I have a long standing fascination with Taft and that t-shirt is wonderful. Just wonderful.

I’m featured prominently in the background of the James Robinson interview… holding my Dark Horse bag and chewing gum like a crazy person. I guess appearing as an "extra" on the video podcast makes up for not making it to the party at Tivoli.

  32. Which other episodes was Joe Casey in?  That was awesome.

  33. @400yrs check for almost any of other eps shot at Cons, he’s bound to be there

  34. He’s in all the San Diego shows.  And WonderCon from this past year.

  35. We need to have Sonia and Joe Casey meet up at some point. I mean I love that Mike Romo moment with him….but I was so hoping for her to just come out of no where and clock him.

Maybe that’s just me and my style of comedy.

  36. Sweet!  Looking back through some of the older episodes.  That Bagley Wondercon interview must’ve been tough.

  37. It’s not one of my best.

  38. @josh: Ironic cause I just finished that show too. That Bagley interview is interesting and funny at the same time….then James Robinson comes in 🙂

  39. This is rather late, but did Mr. Richards in fact recieve the SIP omnibus numbered 1?  On his website Mr. Moore stated that it went to a close friend, is that Mr. Richards?

  40. great coverage of comic-con well done !!

  41. Great job on these interviews. Kudos to everyone involved.

  42. Nice work guys. Mike Romo is a champ! Anyone who can handle Joe Casey in an interview is pretty tough in my book. He scares me.

James Robinson is grand. Nice interview Josh!
